Single Parents

What do you do?

I am assuming most of us are full time working moms since someone has to do it. What do you do? Have you always worked? Were you a SAHM before you were a single mom?

Re: What do you do?

  • I have worked since DD was 3 months, and before that I was in school full time (I started my last class when she was 2 weeks old to the day).

I work in auto insurance claims, so I talk to people after they wreck their cars. Before STBXH and I split he was a SAHD, not he is just a deadbeat without a job. He seems to be having a problem finding work after being home for a year and a half.

  • I am a police officer. I actually met STBXH in the Academy. I have been doing this for 5 years and before that I was working full time and in school at night. Being a SAHM is NOT for me!

  • Before I married my stbx I worked for an insurance company as an office manager and was going to school to get my life/health license so I could become an agent with in the company.  With stbx in the military, we discussed that I quit my job and get a job once DC was a little older (3 to 6 months).  However, my DC#1 was born with a rare cancer-like autoimmune disease and as a result,we were in the hospital every month (3 months straight at the beginning) for chemotherapy and illnesses related to being on the chemo.  I decided I would go back to school (online) so I went to school and took care of DD#1.  When she relapsed and the doctors suggested we have another DC I stayed in school until complications with my 2nd pregnancy prevented me from doing so (stbx and I were split up at this time).  I planned on going back to school immediately but my DD#2 was overdosed on a drug called Reglan and I then spent the next 9 months going to the drs with her.  I started back to school last spring and am transferring to a University to finish my degree.  I tried to get a job about 6 months ago, but because I have been out of work since 2006, no one will even consider me for a position.  So basically I am a student and SAHM for now.

    (wow, sorry for the novel)

  • I started working after having my first. I was forced back to work for the money after my second. Worked while I was single and am still working after remarrying & adopting #3. I want to be a SAHM but DH makes less and is going to school full-time. Hoping to retire early at this point. I have the oldest getting ready for collage next year......ugh.

  • I'm an Internet Coordinator and Web Designer for Ford, working full time. I used to be a part time model on the side as well before I was pg. Now I have a contract for a maternity clothing line for 3 magazine ads and will stop modeling after my little guy is born. When X and I were together I planned on being a SAHM for the first year to save $ on daycare. But now for the first 6 months I will be working from home only going into the office twice a week, then hopefully be going back to school part time to finish my dental hygeneist degree.
  • I am a full time audiologist at one of the top hospitals in our city.  I was full time before stbxh and I met, took off 10 weeks when DS was born and went right back to full time.  I love my profession and i am NOT cut out to be a SAHM.

  • I have always worked full time.  I'm a Data Analyst for an advertising research company.  Before this I worked in Airline Reservations until DD was 8 months old and couldn't take the night and weekend hours with a baby anymore!

  • I'll pipe in.  I am an executive assistant/personal assistant for the nicest guy/family/company.  I have been here 9 years, I worked before I had my daughter, he was thrilled when I announced I was pregnant, very kind when I was out on maternity and now great that I am back to work.  I sometimes bring my daughter in (just to see everyone.)  I could work from home if needed.  Sometimes I watch his children (taking mine along) instead of going to the office.  it is the best situation since I have to work since we have become accustomed to things like food, shelter, and the occasional splurges!
