3rd Trimester

PSA: Your insurace might cover....

....Childbirth classes.  We get reimbursed $65 with Highmark.

Also, at our BFing class, the LC told us that she has never seen a claim denied for a "Breast Pump Kit" which contains one manual breast pump - our hospital give Medela, but you have to ask for it!

Just an FYI

Re: PSA: Your insurace might cover....

  • Another PSA:  if you are planning to formula feed, your insurance may cover formula!!  My friend told me about this yesterday.  She called blue cross to inquire about it and apparently they cover up to $2500!  Her sister had twins about a year ago and there was no limit to her coverage!  I don't plan on formula feeding, but if I end up doing it, I will certainly at least check it out

This irritates me. I plan on exclusively FF and I don't think it's the responsibility of my insurance company to provide food for my child. That would be like me asking them to cover milk and bread for my family.

Of course, there are extreme circumstances where LO needs a prescription for a special type of formula...but those instances are rare.

  • I agree that it is a bit extreme, but I figure if you are paying into your health insurance and they are willing to reimburse you for things like this, then to take them up on that offer.  There are plenty of things that should be covered by insurance companies that are much more "medically necessary" that are not covered....instances like this are certainly proof that health care policies need a bit of reform one way or another.

    Agreed.  Smile

  • I just would like to warn everyone to check with their insurance before they expect anything. In CT by law they do not have to cover anything unless deemed highly medically needed. Like if the child is allergic to ALL formula and needs BM and I HAVE to pump. that is the only way I would get my pump covered.I do believe i can use my FSA account for my prep classes but by reimbursement only.

Can I take this a step further and say the unspeakable. It irks me that certain women who get pregnant with their 400th kid and cannot afford them, do not use the FREE food supply mother nature gave them but that the $20 formula comes out of my pay check. OK, vent over. Flame away. LOL

It is kinda irritating.. but formula is EXPENSIVE! I don't qualify for any type of state assistance, like WIC.. but we still are basically paycheck to paycheck.. if my insurance company would cover that I would definatly take advantage of it! I pay alot for insurance.. and for the most part hardley use it (except pregnancy of course!)...

so I think i'll call my insurance and ask- just in case!

I'm going to be blunt: you should have considered that before you got pregnant.

I know you said your first was unplanned, but this one wasn't. And you already had a child at home so you have experience with the cost of formula.

We live paycheck to paycheck, too, but I'll be buying my own formula. We'll buy the generic Target brand. I did with DS and it worked beautifully.

I never said I couldn't afford the formula and I have had all the intentions in the world to buy everything that my LO needed. What I'm saying is WHY NOT take advantage of something that you are already paying for out of pocket? It's like your insurance company saying they will pay for the breast pump and then saying, no thanks- i'll get it myself!  IF my insurance covers something like formula then that's really exciting and would save me some money.. that's all
