Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Recommend your breast pump.

I know I will need a double breast pump b/c I plan to go back to work after 6 wks and need to make sure I have a sufficient amount of milk for LO. I thought about getting the Medela In Style Advanced. I'm all about a great investment, but $279.99 is too much.

Please recommend your breast pump and tell me what you like about it. Would it really be worth buying the Medela? Should I opt to buy the single breastpump for $150?

Re: Recommend your breast pump.

  • The PISA is definitely worth it! You can also use the BRU 20% off coupons on them. That will drop it down to $224 for you.

  • Does your pediatrician's office sell pumps? There are lactation consultants at my DD's office, and I bought the Medela Swing for $30 less than Target and BRU sells it for. Do you know if your insurance company would cover the cost of a pump?
  • I have the Medela Pump in Style and think its totally worth the money.  We would have spent that in one month on formula for our twins.

I considered renting a double pump and you could think about that. Our hospital had rentals for 70 per month but since I plan to breastfeed and pump for atleast 4 months, I figured I should just buy one.

But the other poster is right, you can use a BRU coupon on it AND your completion coupon on it so you could get a better deal.

  • I have to agree, the PISA is amazing! I had a First Years Mi Pump that broke after a month of use, so I invested in the PISA and I love it!

  • i love love loveeee my PISA! i was going to originally buy the avent isis manual hand pump because it was only like $50 compared to $279 lol and thank goodness i didn't because i pump a lot more than i thought i would and the PISA is so quick and easy! i know its a lot of $$ but totally worth the money in my opinion.. Smile
  • I use the Madela Pump in Style & I love it.  Yes it's alot of money but once you start to see how fast they go through your milk you'll want a double pump & it's totally worth it if you're planning on pumping for longer than 2 or 3 mo's.  You're done in 8-13 minutes so you could techinically pump on your breaks if you need. I also like that they have a shoulder bag so it's not so obvious in the office once I'm back to work.  :)
  • Unfortunately my ins doesn't cover this.

    Thank you for the recommendations.

  • SCOUR your local Targets.  I just purchased the Medela PISA on clearance for $199, they had three of them. I have not used it yet, but I have heard great things about it too.

Also, I work with a girl who got the Medela Single Swing and said that it is the one thing she regrets, she really should have spent the money on a double.

  • I have the Lansinoh Double Electric and I LOVE it. I got it for $120 on Amazon.com.   It's a closed system so no milk gets into the tubing. I did a lot of research and read a ton of reviews before buying it. I'm so happy I went with this one.

  • I went with the Lansinoh Double Electric as well.  I really like it and it was much less expensive than the Medela pumps.  I've never used Medela so I don't know if mine is as good, but it's good enough for me.  I would reccommend a double pump though so it doesn't take you twice as long to pump each time.

They usually have them on drugstore.com for a pretty good price.  If you sign up, they'll send you coupons.  Then when the pump is on sale and you have a coupon, it could be less than $100!

  • I purchased this pump....Amazon had it on sale for $180 in December.  It's completely worth the money, very easy to use, closed system, the bag is stylish (no one guesses it's a breast pump), it comes with the manual pump which is awesome to use when I'm out and about for long periods of time, and the little coolers and ice packs are another wonderful plus!

The petals that go on the cone are so comfortable and def help with a quick letdown, I've pumped in under 8 min! (for 4-5 oz total)

ETA:  I forgot to mention that it's a learning pump, so you at first do two manual pumps to "show" the machine how fast/hard you want it and then push the button to have it mimic what you just did.  This was wonderful when I was too sore from BF!

Whichever one you choose, I would suggest going with a double instead of a single, it's more efficient.  When I initially started pumping, I tried doing it one side at a time and saw that the other side would leak and waste milk.  AND I also noticed an increase in my output on my left side (which is the lower producing side) when I pumped both at the same time.  So not only is it faster, it saves milk!

  • Spend the money the first time around and get a good double pump.  I started out with a Medela swing pump and ended up buying the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra a month later.  I wasted a lot of money by trying to save.

  • I rented a Hygeia enjoye pump from my LC and it's pretty good.  You can get a "bare bones" model (without the fancy bag and such) for around $200, and it has a hospital grade filter so it can be used by multiple people/resold when you're done.

  • I highly recommend the PISA,
  • I also have the Lansinoh.  I love it, I can be done pumping in 8-10 minutes, double sided.  I've used it every day since she was 6 weeks old with no problems.  For the money I saved over the medela, I bought a nice ice bag and purse like bag to put it in and STILL saved over $100.
