WAHMs... logistics?

For those who WAH and have no daycare for LO, how do you do it?  How many hours a day do you actually get work done?  Do you end up doing a lot on weekends and at night when DH is around?

Even if LO is a good napper I don't think I'll be able to get a lot done in that time, but maybe I'm wrong.  Please share your experiences!

Re: WAHMs... logistics?

  • I WAH but for a company, so there's no way I could care for LO and work at the sametime.  They actually have policies in place that say they can ask for documentation at anytime to prove that you have a care giver for your child.  If that's not the case for you, I guess you can just work around their napping schedule and at night.

  • I WAH. There is naptime, but you can also get a lot of work done while the baby is playing right next to you. Right now, my baby is sitting on my lap and playing with a rattle.

I do work a lot at night when the while family is sleeping too.

  • If I work at home, I would have to have someone to watch her.
  • I considered this, but ultimately decided there's no way it would be possible. Not 40 hours a week, and definately not without help.

Someone put it to me this way:

Working and simultaneously being the sole caretaker for your child is like taking your baby to work and sitting it in the corner of your cube in a bassinet. At some point, you're either going to neglect your job, or you're going to neglect your kid.

If you're considering working from home, I suggest you hire a babysitter or helper to watch the baby while you work. If you have the luxury of being able to work "off" hours (nights and weekends), your spouse or SO could watch the baby while you work.

  • I WAH some of the time and will be sending DD to daycare as soon as they'll take her (8w). I tried when DS was a NB to WAH and watch him. I got nothing done. I know the first 8 weeks will be hard and DH and I will have to change our schedules and rearrange things so we can both get our jobs done. I don't think it's possible to really accomplish much when you're in charge of a NB.

  • I work @ part-time from home from 5:30am to 8:30am - before my son wakes up.  There is no way I would be able to work when he is awake.  When my second is born in a couple of weeks I think I probably will be a SAHM full-time and won't be able to work anymore (unless I took the kids to day care).
  • Yeah, I completely agree with all of you - I can't imagine getting more than maybe 30 minutes of actual work done a day with a LO here.  My job is flexible, but I don't want to spend all the time DH is home working either.  We are currently in the process of looking for a part-time day care provider.

I was just curious though because I see these posts about WAHMs and it seems like some of them don't have any child care... I'm honestly interested in hearing how they do it and how much work really gets done.

  • I WAH and plan on putting DS in daycare because I'm positive I couldn't focus and would want to take pictures and play with him all day:)  I spend 80% of my day on the phone in conference calls so having a crying baby in the background wouldn't work.

The day care we found is just down the street.  I've planned for full time care but may adjust it once he's here and do part time with DH's help (he has flex time and i work west coast hours so technically I can wait till noon to take him over and DH can go in early and come home early etc..)

  • I can get about a half day of work done if I stay home with DS bc he is sick or something.  But that is pushing it, and no way would I want to do that every day- it is too stressful.  I only do it if I absolutely have to get something done.

  • I'll be a WAHM after LO is here; fortunately DH has flexible hours, so he can change his work schedule to be home for a block of time in the morning and a block of time later in the day so I can work uninterrupted.  When LO gets a little older we will probably need to use a Mother's Morning Out-type program (i.e. not all day like regular daycare).  Fortunately I do work on deadline as opposed to set hours, so as long as my work gets done on time it doesn't matter what kind of crazy hours I use to do it.
