Britax Marathon ?

I'm looking at https://www.britaxusa.com/car-seats/marathon/product-demo , under "fit & specs" and it only has the max weight for rear-facing but not the max height. I do not know DD's seated shoulder height. I am wondering if I should forward face her now. Her feet are touching the seat - I can try moving up the shoulder harness but wish I could find the height limits - does anyone know?

TIA

Re: Britax Marathon ?

  • I ended up calling them and the rep told me it's 49" for both RF and FF - she said it's normal for the child's knees to be bent and the feet to touch the back seat of the car. I am certain I heard/read that there are height restrictions for car seats, perhaps only other car seats have it? I may end up switching her FF soon anyway.

  • We have the Blvd, but I think the specs are the same as the Marathon.  I'm hoping to keep DD rear facing as close to two as possible (we'll see how that works).  She definitely won't reach the weight limit by then.

My understanding is that closer to age two the muscles in their neck and shoulders are much stronger and better built to sustain force from a crash.  The legs are strong and although an injury could be sustained, legs heal.  Rear facing lessens the force on the head/neck/upper body compared to forward facing.  I'm not sure the specific source of that info - presumably what I was reading while researching convertible carseats.

That's interesting.  What the rep told you contradicts the manual, which says you can use the seat rear-facing only until the child's head is up to an inch from the top of the seat but that you can use it forward facing longer.

Here's how the manual (pages 6-7) describes the limits for rear-facing:

    Only use rear-facing with children:

? who weigh between 5 and 35 lbs. (2.3 ? 15.9 kg.) and ? when the top of the child?s head is 1? (2.5 cm.) or more below the top of the child seat shell (Fig. A) and ? when the harness straps are located in the nearest slots at or below the child?s shoulders (Fig A).

    And for forward-facing:

Only use forward-facing with children: ? who are at least one year of age and ? who weigh between 20 and 65 lbs. (9.1 ? 29.5 kg.) and ? who are 49? (124.5 cm.) or less in height and ? when the top of the child?s ears are below the top of the child seat shell and ? when the harness straps are located in the nearest slots at or above the child?s shoulders, parallel to level ground (Fig. B).
