We had the Rainforest (which is now Precious Planet) swing, and it was fine, although my SIL had the Boppy one and it was much softer.
We borrowed from SIL the Britax Companion infant carrier seat (but he maxed it out on height at 5.5 months) and he now uses the Britax Marathon and we love it. This pregnancy, I think we will be getting a Peg Prima Viaggo SIP as a carrier, since I can get it locally at the Peg outlet for $139 and the Britax Chaperone is now $225.
We loved the Baby Trend Snap N Go stroller base when we used the carrier. And now we have the Contours stroller (but I don't recommend it, after a year of use it is starting to show age. Don't know how much longer it will last).
Hope that helps! We also LOVE the book Baby Bargains, best $10 I ever spent when I was overwhelmed by baby gear. Oh, and I definitely check the reviews on Amazon.com. Good luck!
For the swing, i think best ones are the ones that can be switched between swinging back and forth and side-to-side. Babies like variety. We had one from Fisher Price and it worked very well until DD was about 5 months or so. The swing we had was battery-operated, and when she got bigger it literally 'ate' batteries, so i would recommend getting one with an AC adapter (ours did not have that option unfortunately)
As for car seats, there are several great choices depending on what you want to go with - infant carrier vs. convertible one. We had an Evenflo infant carrier with our first daughter, and although i kida like the handle and that it had a rounded bottom so it could be rocked when not used in a car, i think Evenflo car seats are flimsy compared to better more expensive ones. For this baby we were originally planning to skip the infant seat and go for a convertible one instead - Safety 1st Air with side impact protection (for children 4-50 lbs), but decided to go with the infant seat... not planning to lug it around for longer than the first month or 2, but i think it is well worth for the convenience of not waking the baby when getting him in and out of the car during the first couple of months... The main reason we are getting the infant carrier is because baby will be born some time in February and it is cold here in Wisconsin - it is safer and easier to have the child securely strapped into the seat before you leave the car. Also, can come in handy if a child has an acid reflux like our daughter had - we often had her nap in her car seat or swing at home to help her keep her milk down. The infant car seat we plan to get is Chicco KeyFit or keyfit 30 - i test-installed it yesterday when we went to BRU, i really liked the ease of installation, and how well padded it is. It comes with a nice body pillow insert for babies 4-11 lbs. Also, the bottom of the base is covered so it won't leave ugly marks on the back seat of your car, especially if you have leather seats :-)
Additional bonus on the KeyFit car seat - the stroller we got comes with the universal car seat adapter included - we can use pretty much any infant car seat on the market with this stroller, including Chicco Keyfit. (stroller is caller I'coo Targo, is in 500-600 $ range, we got it for 440 $ online with free shipping and no tax. Has a reversible seat that fully reclines with ah weather boot and included newborn bassinet)
We had the little lamb swing and even though it only takes batteries, we only changed them once in all the time she used it - and she used that swing a lot!
We got the graco snug ride infant seat and the baby jogger city mini stroller with the adapter. Our convertible seat is the Britax Boulevard. DD just started using it and loves it!
And with the delivery trifecra of one twin vaginal, one c-section with general anesthesia for twin B, Spencer and Sidney joined us at 35 weeks exactly on June 18.
For a swing, I went with the FP Zen Collection Swing. I love this swing for 2 reasons: The first is that it plugs in, so I dont have to worry about batteries running out, and the second is that it swings in two directions (back/front and side/side). For an infant carseat, I went with the Graco Snugride (Platnium) and the adapter so that I can use it with my Bugaboo Camelon. So far I have been happy with the carseat, although I do find it a little heavy to car around already and my DS is barely 10 pounds. For a convertable carseat I went with the Britax Advocate and have been very happy with it. Its huge, so you may want to test it out in your car first to make sure it fits.
