Babies: 0 - 3 Months

ok, I tried "happiest baby," but how do I KEEP him calm?

He responds to the "Happiest Baby on the Block" techniques, but once we stop with the "shushing" or "bouncing," he always goes right back to screaming.  I'm not going to be able to blow shushes all night or bounce him all night.  The idea is to get him calm so he stays that way.  Did I miss the section on the DVD where it discusses how to KEEP babies calm once you get them that way?

  • I'm wondering the same thing!

  • Try the blowdryer, does that calm him down?

If so, run, don't walk, to buy the Homedics Sound Spa Lullaby at Bed Bath and Beyond or Buy Buy Baby.  Leave it on all night as loud as it goes, on ocean, right near your baby's head.  Our baby has slept 7-12 hours straight every night since using this.  It's the baby crack machine!

works for us too...well not 7 hours but atleast 5

  • I purchased an MP3 of blow dryer noise and put a small stereo near where he sleeps. We move the iPod from room to room using the blow dryer noise wherever we need it.
  • If I use white noise or bounce or swaddle I have to do it until he's asleep. Not just asleep for a minute but for like 20 minutes. It sucks, but it works! But normally if I end up having to do that stuff its because he's overtired and fussy anyway.

  • Found a place on the radio between stations with no interference from other stations.  Free constant white noise.
  • We use a fan in his nursery and that works for us when it's nighttime, but what about day? My worst time is right now, his witching hour. It's too early to put him down for the night, so he's still "up," but not falling asleep.

For example, I just swaddled, bounced, and "shushed" for 20 minutes. He fell asleep, I held him for an extra 5 minutes and then put him in the swing so I could get my toddler ready for bed.  Within 3 minutes, he's back to yelling again. We start the process over, I get him calm, set him down, and wham, he's upset again.  What is a girl to do????

  • If I remember correctly, Carlyn, he sleeps fine at night, just screams all day right?  Not that I am making light of it, but I have the baby crack machine too, and I am not sure it would work well for hours of daytime crying.  Great for night though.

Yep Brig, he does fine at night, just cries during the day. He went a week with STTN and then moved back to 5 hours. Last night, though, he slept 10 hours. I can't complain at all about his nights. He does great. It's days and especially 7pm-12am. Like I said, I can get him calm, but he never stays that way. It's really not even if I put him down, he'll cry even if I'm still holding him. "Happiest Baby" stuff will get him calm, but after about 3 minutes of stopping any of the techniques (especially the "shushing"), he's going at it again.

I'm just looking for a practical solution, if there is one. I can't leave a fan running full blast with Samuel running around, or the vacuum cleaner for that matter.  Is there a section in the Happiest Baby book (I only got the DVD) that talks about how to KEEP babies calm once you get them that way?

  • Ok, so just being practical...I don't have the book but there is a copy of it at work, so I will look tomorrow.  But in the mean time, some ideas....

    Have you tried a sling/baby bjorn/moby?

Vibration on either a swing or bouncer?

My bouncer is the ocean wonders by fisher price and it has the vibration and a little attachment that plays music and blows bubbles up through its fish and starfish...Kylee (lately) has been loving to watch it.

Is the swing (turned on) working for you still?  Or has that stopped?  I am guessing the Nutramigen did not do the trick, same results with the Nestle?

I will ask at work (of one of our parent educators that work with lots and lots of parents who have extraordinary fussy babies) and see if they have any tricks up their sleeves for you.  I will be in touch tomorrow afternoon.

In the meantime, sending hugs and quiet Eli vibes to Indiana!

  • I play the hair dryer MP3 in the living room while the baby is in his swing during the day is he is having a meltdown. They also make a vacuum cleaner one as well.
  • I came lurking to find you ladies after reading the Bedrest post.  Carlyn and Brigid...you ladies are awsome and you made me blush!  I think it's really just pity for me since I've been stuck on bedrest for so long! :-)  I'm starting to think I won't know how to act normally when I can resume life again....

Carlyn...I know I'm not a Mom yet, but I helped a lot with my colic cousin.  Do you have a washer and dryer in your house?  We would put him on the washer on the spin cycle and run the dryer at the same time...it really helped keep him asleep.  Oh, heavens I wish there was a magic answer for you!  Keep sane and I hope things get better soon!  Sending prayers and quiet your way!

  • My son screams all day long - due to acid reflux and constipation...have you looked into any of those things as to why he is screaming all day long??? In order to calm him down, he likes to be bounced and swayed at the same time and this usually works.

the blow dryer is another good thing too, usually puts him to sleep for  a while..good luck :)

  • I Am SUCH a bad friend. I just logged on to see this post. I have a CD of "The Happiest Baby on the Block" sounds. It's a few hours worth of white noise. Would you like me to send it to you? I can't help with the colic, Andy never had that. But I can ship the CD along or I think it's available at Childrens PLace or online. Love you!
