me sick=baby sick?

i remember hearing a commercial about H1N1 and that women who got the flu were having miscarriages because the baby's couldnt handle it... i dont have the flu but i have a bad cold.. do you think it affects the baby?

Re: me sick=baby sick?

  • I just asked my DD this cause I have strep- your baby is all nice and protected in that amniotic sac. Just try to keep some food in your body and he or she is a-ok.

  • thanks! made me feel better
  • I am wondering the same thing really. I have had a really bad cold for a week now and can't stop coughing. It's super bad when I wake up.

I'm also really worried about taking medicines for too many days in a row. I've taken Tyleonl PM for about 4 days. I skipped yesterday but am back to feeling awful again today so I want to take it again so that I can at least breath at night, but I'm scared it'll hurt my baby. The vaporizor and Vick's aren't doing anything. I guess the drugs scare me more than the illness.

  • i think the H1N1 thing was because they women were so dehydrated and having other problems that it would cause miscarriage not because the baby actually got it. Poor thing, hope you feel better!

I have to take a Tylonel PM to help me sleep (especially now since I'm sick as well). My doc said it was perfectly fine and my coworker who was a nurse for years said that the stuff that's in Tylonel and Tylonel PM doesn't cross over the placenta, so you should be fine there! I'm with you on the cold meds, though. I've been trying to just tough it out and use natural remedies.

  • The way my doctor explained it to me is that if I don't feel good or my body is fighting an infection that it isn't good for the baby- not necessarily because they baby gets whatever I have but more so because your body naturally does things to conserve your energy or health that can sometimes hurt the baby (like my oxygen levels dropping last week- that isn't good for the baby).

If you read up a lot of meds don't cross the placenta and it is much better for the baby for you to be healthy.  The other thing I was told is that fevers over 100 needs to be seen ASAP as that isn't good for baby and does affect them.

Not sure if that helps- but i have to say I am seeing three doctors to try and help me get better and I am on six medications (a rescue inhaler, a steroid inhaler, an oral steroid, two allergy meds, and an antibiotic) and when they told me that at first I freaked until that told me what not treating me did to my baby (could cut off their oxygen, cause low birth weight, premature birth or preclampsia) and I realized it was worse to NOT treat than to take the meds.
