Austin Babies

moms of babies with eczema

What soap do you use to bathe your LO?  Lotion?  D has some really rough dry patches and I may need to switch what we use.

Re: moms of babies with eczema

  • We still use J&J baby wash for baths, but we switched lotion from J&J to Eucerin.  It has made a HUGE difference - no more rough patches at all.  We lotion him up after baths/at night and in the morning before getting dressed.

  • We use Nature's Baby Organics Vanilla Tangerine. We sort of do a Marine shower most nights =) There is no reason to soap your baby/toddler head to toe unless they're actually dirty. We wash her hair and just use the suds from that to wash her down. We use Eucerin Calming Cream on her face and the backs of her knees. Sometimes during a flare up we re-apply 3x a day per the pedi. It clears up fast. We use Aquaphor on her cheeks/face when we know she'll be outside in the wind/cold (MDO).

  • California Baby Super Sensitive Wash in the bath, Aveeno with 1% Hydrocortisone on the bad patches, and Cetaphil Lotion all over 2x a day (at least).

I second this!  I use the Oatmeal version of J&J soap and the fragrence free Eucerin - we have seen a huge improvement in less than a week!  The only patches he has left are under his chinS due to all the drooling.

  • Unfortunately Cetaphil bar soap is the only one that doesn't break Luke out.  We bathe him with that every other day and grease him down with Eucerine after bathtime.  If he's got some really stubborn spots I put Aquaphor on that after bath and throughout the day.
  • We use Dove bar soap (pedi recommendation) and Aveeno baby lotion.
  • Just to add another opinion/option...we switched from J&J to Aveeno baby bath/body wash. We also use the Aveeno lotion after the bath and it has been truly helpful in minimizing/getting rid of the dry patches

  • Cetaphil (or the generic brand) soap.  For lotion we alternated between Aquaphor and Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Body Creme.  DD's eczema was behind her knees and was pretty bad at times...almost bleeding. When that happened we'd use a little Cortisone to heal it up and then get back to just lotion.  We only bathed every other day and applied lotion after baths and at every diaper change.  I had read that it commonly clears up by 18 months and thank God, DD's went away completely around 19 months!  I always felt so bad for her.

Hope you can get some relief for your little guy!

ETA: For washing her hair, we used California Baby Super Sensitive Shampoo & Bodywash.  Even though DD's eczema is now gone, we are still using the same Cetaphil and California Baby stuff.  But we don't have to buy the super thick lotion and just use Cetaphil lotion.

  • We use Aveeno to bathe, and then cetaphil lotion afterwards.

Ditto.  Our pedi also gave us a steroid cream when Joseph's eczema was particularly bad at one visit.  That stuff is a miracle worker, but you can only use it for a week at a time.

  • DD had all over her arms, legs, and face.  We found cetaphil soap and aquaphor ointment was the best.

I can tell you from a thrush outbreak experience....don't use anything with calendula.  What it does is acts like an antibacterial....killing even the good bacteria.  Which allows the yeast to take over....causing a yeast infection, AKA thrush.  Just read the back of lotions, it's in most lotions specifically made for eczema, it also smells a little like camomile.
