Dogs in nursery?

For those of you with dogs, will the dogs be allowed to go in the nursery? Ever? During the day only and locked out @ night? Will you vaccuum/sweep/clean the nursery more often if the dogs are allowed in?

If you have a dog trainer, what does your trainer say about letting dogs in the nursery (and problems with aggression if shutting them out)?

Re: Dogs in nursery?

  • I have two dogs (lab and boxer) and I plan on letting them go in the nursery. They have been going in there ever since my DH finished it in September.  We will clean it up as much as we usually do other rooms pretty much every day.  :)

  • Loading the player...
  • Dogs will be allowed in at anytime.  They stick around us and go with us around the house so if we're in the nursery then I am sure they will be in there as well.  Won't clean any more than usual unless a problem arises with LO.  I want them to get used to LO and vise versa.

  • our dog is not allowed upstairs at all. we have a gate at the bottom of the stairs.

  • I don't have a dog, but 2 cats and we are not allowing them in the nursery. We have it pretty much all set up so they can go and explore now, but we are putting a screen door on the outside so they can't get it. (It looks better than it sounds).
  • My dog is a part of my family, so yes he will be allowed in the nursery.

I will most likely vacuum more once she is here anyways.

  • Our dog has been in the nursery with us while we've set up the crib, glider, etc. and while I've organized and put stuff away. She likes to check things out and be in on the action. I don't think it will be a problem if she follows me in there when I'm changing the baby and whatnot. She's a very sweet dog and great with babies and kids, so I can already see them being best buds. I will vacuum the nursery regularly as I do all the other rooms in the house.
  • We have 2 dogs and I plan on letting them in the nursery whenever they want.  I have no fear that they will do anything (though to be fair, they are pugs) and so long as they don't destroy anything I have no worries.  As far as vacuuming, I don't plan on doing it more often, it wouldn't make sense since there will inevitably be dog hair in the rest of the house.  I read a study that kids who grow up with pets are less likely to have allergies and there is such a thing as being too clean.  It can actually have negative effects down the road (one study showed that kids who were kept too clean were more likely to have eczema).  I don't plan on having a dirty, dog hair covered kid, but I am not going to overreact about pet hair either.

  • At this point we are not letting our dog in the nursery because we want to establish the room as the baby's territory. Once the baby comes and our dog realizes that the nursery is the baby's space we will probably let her go in there.

  • Our 2 chocolate labs will be let in.  We already let them in the room now to get them familiar with everything that's in it.  We just vacuum it like we would with any other room.

We are thinking about putting a gate up at night so that they can see in the nursery but that they won't wake the baby up while he's sleeping.  But since he'll spend the first month or so in our room (where the dogs sleep now) we may not even need a gate.

  • We have two dogs.  Most of the time the door is closed to the nursery but it used to be a computer room so they were in and out all the time.  I will definitely have to vaccum at least one maybe two more times (they are hairy dogs!).  They will probably be allowed in when the door is open.

My dogs have been around my nephew from the time he was 2 weeks old and never showed any aggression/jealousy etc.  They were curious at first but then eventually went on to mind their own business.

  • We've been letting ours go in and explore. (We set it up early so they had time to get used to the change.) We've been training them that it's a quiet space.

I clean it as much as I clean the rest of the house. I generally vacuum 4 times a week.

  • We have a shih tzu and don't plan on keeping her out - I don't think she'll have much interest in going in there anyways. If anything, I'd shut the door to the nursery when none of us are home - we'll keep it open at night so we can hear the baby.

She doesn't shed much so we won't vacuum/dust/sweep in there (due to her) any more than our other rooms.  Unless the baby shows signs of being allergic or something.

  • Our nursery is upstairs and we have a baby gate at the bottom of our stairs.  Not because they are not allowed, but because we have an older dog with really bad hips and he falls easily on the steps.  If we weren't worried about him falling, they would have free access.  I might actually like having them in there....I have this weird fear that someone will come in the window and steal my baby (think Lindburg) and the dogs could protect her.... Crazy, I know!
  • Our dogs have been allowed into our daughters room since she was born.  They only come in there if we are in there but it is too hard to try and keep them from following us.  We have had no problem with this.  They aren't in there often so we vacuum the normal amount.  Plus DD hardly ever plays in her room anyway.  I have more concern with the living room floors since that is where she spends a majority of her time.  I vacuum almost daily.

  • We have two labs and they are going to be allowed in the nursery. We already keep the door open and don't have a problem with them going in and out. Not sure about nighttime yet, DD will be sleeping in a bassinet in our room for the first little while so we will see how everything goes (one dog sleeps in our room, the other tends to sleep on the main floor).

We don't have a dog trainer to ask but we are all going to be living together in the whole house so I figure that the dogs might as well be allowed in the nursery too.  As for cleaning, we will wipe down surfaces that are dog reach with vinegar (cleaning product of choice in our house) and using the swiffer sweeper to handle any tumbleweeds that crop up. We will do a good vacuuming every couple of days or as needed.

I would love to hear what other people are doing as well!

This! Are dogs don't really shed so I am not worried about hair plus I am a vacuum alcoholic . I want the dogs to feel comfortable around the baby and get used to the idea of change. I have caught my one dog sleeping on the floor in there already...I think they sense change is coming!!!

  • My sister has 2 dogs and the one acts like Nana from Peter Pan and the other could care less about the baby. They both have been allowed to sniff the baby when he first came home and when he was in the car seat in the house but not greet him like they would us (ie licking or jumping). We made sure of that. My mom doesn't clean any more or less because of the baby and doesn't feel the need to. If we had a dog, we would be doing the same thing.

  • Sure why not? The cats can go in too. Obviously we won't leave the animals there with baby unsupervised though.
  • My dog is not allowed in the nursery, mainly because we have a queen bed in there and she thinks she is allowed to sleep on it! (She is NOT allowed on furniture). So I just babygated the room and it will stay that way. My dog is not at all aggressive so her feelings aren't hurt by the gate! She respects boundaries. It will be good to have one dog-free room with the LO.
  • We have 2 boxers and they are allowed in there and will continue to be allowed in the nursery once the baby arrives... In fact, one of our boxers is so attached to me/baby (he is currently laying next to be with his head on my belly... he also has panic attacks when I would leave the house) that we put a dog bed in the corner for him...

  • My dogs will be allowed in the nursery. I want to keep their routines/lives as normal as possible, and they both like to sleep in there, so I don't plan to change that. Plus, I'll be sleeping in there too :) BUT, I won't let them in there with the baby when we are not in the room, at least a first until they get used to her.

  • I have one dog, and plan on letting her in there whenever.  I will be cleaning as much as I always do.
If being a math nerd is wrong, I don't wanna be right!
  • well seeing as how i have SIX dogs, not all of them will be allowed in. i think i will let MY dog in (only when i am in there with the dog) bc she is very clingy to me and i dont want to upset her and always kick her out of the babys room or my room. but there will be times that i will not allow the dog to be around. like the first few days to a week. i highly concerned that she will get jealous and hurt the baby. so its gonna take a lot of watching out.
  • I want my dog to be as comfortable as possible in the nursery.  She's been afraid of that room since we did it so we try to coax her into it when we are there so she can get used to it.  I won't leave my dog alone with a newborn, but once we know she can be 100% trusted I have no problem with her still having her same house roaming privileges as she does now.

As for cleaning, I will vacuum it as often as I do the rest of the house, same goes for dusting.  I know some people thing animals are just dirty but I'm not one of them.  We keep our dog groomed and for the most part she is always clean.

  • We have two dogs and they will both be allowed in the nursery whenever they want. We won't need to vacuum any more than usual because we already vacuum almost every day (we have the Roomba iRobot so it runs on its own - we just press "Clean" and it does all the work for us :) Best invention ever!).

Our dogs usually stay in whatever room we are in. Our female (English bulldog) will go upstairs to our bedroom sometimes to sleep in front of the vent if our male is "hogging" the one downstairs lol but other than that they don't wander into any rooms unless they're following one of us. So I can't imagine them going into the room much unless we're in there.

  • My dog is a feind for stuffed animals. We have several in the nursery so we have trained him to sit just outside the door but not come in.
  • I have a toy poodle so since they don't shed and have hair instead of fur, he's allowed in the nursery. That also means no extra vacuuming. In fact, I have a feeling that he'll spend more time in there once Gia is here than he does with me. Poodles are very drawn to infants from what my grandmother told me in the experience with her toy poodle and 4 children. Being her guardian will give him something to do.
  • Our dog will definitely be allowed in whenever she wants. She will also probably sit in the glider with us anytime DH or I are in the glider with the baby. It will get cleaned the same as the other rooms.

Our cats are part of our family, but they are not permitted in our bedroom, nor will they be permitted in LO's room.  My cats are nocturnal, and quite active, and like to be around people, so I'd rather not have them keep LO up.  Second, they are extremely furry (I have two Ragdolls), and having two hair-free rooms  is worth it to me.

  • We actually met with our trainer to discuss this before hand. Our lab is extremely well behaved, but he is still a puppy and has a hard time understanding boundaries. We also have a Jack Russell that likes to mark things, and we didn't want this to be an issue when we brought the baby home.

He suggested allowing them in the room, but make sure that you train them to wait at the door until you give them permission to enter.Have them wait at the door, weather you are sitting in the rocker, standing at the changing table, crib or wherever until you give them permission to enter.
He also suggested they know the OUT command so if you want them to leave at any point you can just say out and they will leave. We have been practicing with them for the last couple weeks and it has worked great for us.

  • We trained our Shiba Inu to respect the threshold of the girls' rooms. She tends to lay down right at the doorway and wait for me/us there. She has slipped a few times, obviously she's not perfect, but for the most part it just takes a certain noise from me and she goes back out. It's easier to keep everything hair-free and not worry about toys getting chewed up this way. Plus, DD is in love with her so if the dog was in her room she'd be up all night trying to play!

  • My golden retriever, husky mix and doxie will be allowed in the baby's room most of the time. We've had the nursery set up since August to get them used to the smells and new arrangement of the bedroom. We do have a baby gate, so if we choose not to have them in there we will just baby gate that room so we don't have to shut the bedroom door.

I think my three need to embrace this new "pack member." They have been inquisitive about my growing belly and all of the new things in the house. They seem to do pretty well around my niece and nephews, so I think they will be okay. I just need to keep an eye on the big boys, since they sometimes don't know their own strength/size.

With two large dogs that shed a lot (even after using the Furminator), we will just clean that room as much as we clean the other rooms on our main floor. Dog hair is a constant in our house.

  • No...as soon as we converted the office to the nursery we trained our dog to not come in the room. He just sits/lays by the door. He's also not allowed in the kitchen, bathroom, or on any furniture... including beds. He's a border collie, so he sheds a lot.

  • imageMelly Mel:
our dog is not allowed upstairs at all. we have a gate at the bottom of the stairs.

Same here, but only b/c we have an old, grouchy, terrified-of-her-own-shadow cat, so the rambunctious Doberman doesn't suit her... So we have a duplex where kitty resides upstairs-- but not in the nursery-- and doggie lives downstairs.

Even if we could let the dog upstairs, we'd keep the nursery pet-free. Not for agression reasons, but just the hair. She's a crazy shedder. Oh, and she'd try playing with every single one of DD's toys. By "play", I mean "eat"....

  • We have 2 dogs that are our first babies.  They followed me everywhere before and even more so now.  I keep the nursery door closed when we are not in there.  However, when I'm in the room doing whatever it is I'm doing, they are allowed in there.  I make sure they get to smell all the new things coming in to the house and will be setting up the swing and such before LO arrives and turning it on so that they can get used to it.
  • No, the pets will not be allowed in the nursery.

  • Our two dogs will be allowed in but we've spent the past few months working on rules and boundaries. They are not allowed to bring in toys, or rough house in the room at all. They've learned the OUT! command and now all I have to do is point and they will leave. So if they are calm and quiet, they can be in the room, otherwise they get kicked out. They do love to roll around and rub their faces on the carpet in this room so I've been trying to keep it really clean.

  • Nope. Our dog won't be going in the nursery. She's never gone in that room (or our bedroom) though. When we moved here we decided not to let her in either of the bedrooms. Our dog isn't aggressive in the slightest so I don't anticipate any problems there.
