2nd Trimester

Spinal Fusion

Any other expectant moms previously have a spinal fusion? If so how are you doing with your pregnancy??

Re: Spinal Fusion

  • I had a spinal fusion when I was 2 years old in 1987... of the L2, L3 and L4 vertabres (spelling is wrong on that I know... I think my baby is eating my brain for it's meals).  So far I've had no back pain issues, but I'm only 18 weeks 5 days along.  My OB never has mentioned my previous surgery to me, but I've been wondering if that's going to impact the availability of an epidural (I don't particularly WANT an epidural, but I would like to know if my spine issues have made that impossible or not).

How have you been doing?  How old were you at the time of your surgery?  Has your OB mentioned anything to you about what you should/could be doing differently to help your back?

  • im so glad to talk to someone who has a similar situation... I was 19 when I had my spinal fusion. I have 8 vertabrea fused from the middle to top half of my spine. I felt fine for the first half of my pregnancy but also hadnt gained any weight which my back dr was happy about. It seems just these past two weeks it began. I am so uncomfortable I dont know what to do with myself. It is hard to tell if it is normal pain or not for pregnancy...

My Ob doesn't really know much about my back situation so my pain management doctor is making the decisions as far as my back goes. They discuss together what they feel is best! I think we are going with a C section and the epidural is not decided on yet.

Oh my god, I didn't even think about the actual delivery... I'm not sure how my body will deal with the morphing that is required to have a baby move through the pelvis.  I wonder if I should ask my OB sooner rather than later if he thinks maybe I should see a specialist to see?  It makes me nervous, very nervous, because if I start to get pain, or if something happens, I don't know how long I will be able to live like that with no meds to take the edge off.

How much weight have you gained thus far?  Does a heating pad or cooling pad help the pain?  It seems weird but if I put pressure on my back where iet's sore sometimes it helps, too.  Also water helps mine, swimming especially, the cool water and exercise is obviously good and a lot less strain on the back than traditional exercising.

  • I would defiantly ask about the actually child birth!

I know this type of pain I am experiencing I would normally be on pain meds for but its worse than the normal pain. I have been trying to get in touch with my pain mang dr all day! I might try acupuncture.

I have gained 7 pounds so far. I do try the heating and cooling but very little relief. I am going to look into a place to join that has a pool for me to go swim in. Thank you for that advice!

7 lbs isn't bad at all!!  It sounds like you're on the right track, at least with your back problems you haven't gained 20 already!

Also keep in mind that most hotels have pools and some sell memberships to the area residents, it may be cheaper than joining something like the YMCA... although I have heard that the YMCA near my parent's house goes by income.  Either way it will be good for now and after baby is born so that you can relax and work the baby weight off after.

Let me know if the acupuncture works!  I've heard such good things about acupuncture that I'm very tempted to try it!  Many of my friends keep telling me to go to a chiropracter but I refuse to go anywhere that doesn't know my history and back issues because I am not going to get x-rays for them to know (and if they don't need x-rays to be done to touch me then they aren't professional enough for me to trust my spine with!).
