Infertility

Cost of Clomid question...

The 28th is my appoint to start clomid. I'm going to have to pay for it out of pocket because my insurance doesn't cover any sort of fertility treatments.

Is anyone else paying for this out of pocket? What is the cost typically?

Also my RE mention testing my insulin to see if I need to be taking glucophage.  She doesn't think I will need it but may and feels it will make the clomid more successful. Is anyone else taking this?

Re: Cost of Clomid question...

  • Clomid is pretty inexpensive. If you go to Wal Mart you can get it for $9 for ever 50mg. If you are taking 100 mg it would be $18, and so on. It isn't too bad. I am 100% OOP, so that is what the medicine costs.

  • My insurance doesn't cover most fertility treatments but they did cover clomid so you may double check. I only paid $1 but that was with insurance coverage.

  • My insurance covers it so I only pay about $5.  The Ovidrel, on the other hand, isn't and it costs me anywhere from $70 to $90 depending on where I have to get it.

  • Thanks girls, that's a load off my mind financially!!

Now as long as I don't need the glocophage and it doesn't cost my weight in gold!

  • The generic of glocophage is metformin and most insurance will cover it since it is considered a diabetic medicine. I pay $10 a month for Clomid and $10 a month for 1500 mg of Metformin XR. When I was taking regular Metformin I was still only paying $10 for a month's supply.

  • I'm OOP for meds, and my piece of advice is that Clomid varies a *lot* by pharmacy.  The pharmacy at my university-based clinic wanted to charge me close to $100, but at CVS, RiteAid, etc. it's more like $15-30.

  • I'm soon to begin on Clomid, so for that I'm not sure.

I've been on  Metformin (the generic) for over a year now. 2000mg/day.  It's a lot, but I haven't had ANY nasty side effects that many other people have had.   It costs me anywhere from $7-12 per month (And that's a LOT of pills).  I've been happy with how it has helped my insulin resistance. (PCOS).
