Cloth diapers with disposable inserts??

There are two posts that mention that this morning. Is this something that exists?  I've never heard of that.   I don't understand the point. Aren't you defeating the purpose of a CD if you are throwing out inserts?  So confused.

Re: Cloth diapers with disposable inserts??

  • Well the inserts to my understanding are for when baby is on solids. You flush the insert, and the poo.  Defeating the purpose? No....Because you are still not using actual disposables, which pollute landfills, AND they cost a ton of $ per year. :) It'd still be cheaper I think. (based on what ive read/researched)

Oh, and for me, its worth using something more gentle on baby, and not having to deal with diaper rashes.

  • Loading the player...
  • I got G diapiers - cloth diaper with optional disposable / flushable inserts.  You can chose to get cloth inserts too

  • There are g-diapers and at least one other brand (I think) that have biodegradable, flushable inserts. I think you can also get washable inserts for them, so you can use the flush ones when convenience is particularly important and the cloth inserts at home.

  • I used cloth with ds.  The inserts were cloth(as they are on all the CD's I've ever seen) thus the name cloth diaper.  The outer portion is a plastic of some variety.   I just don't see how it's a CD if you are throwing out the part that should be cloth.  We're planning on using CD's but, the ones where you don't throw anything away.  There are some sitting in the LO's dresser right now. I've just never seen anything other than the typical kind with a cloth interior and plastic-like outer portion.

  • Gro Baby Diapers also have the disposable option.
  • With gdiapers you can use disposable or cloth inserts (as other pp said), but you can also just use prefolds as the insert and apparently they work really well.....
  • Yes, from what I've read it's a flushable insert, kinda like toilet paper (only thicker I would imagine) that you just flush with the poop down the toilet.  Still eco-friendly because it's biodegradable and doesn't fill up landfills and is cheap.  That's what I was asking about...
  • The new BumGenius Flip can be used with disposable inserts or washable inserts. They're designed to make cloth diapering more appealing to families who travel/people on the go because you can just throw away inserts if need be. I'm going to try the Flip with reusable inserts. If we travel I may consider trying the disposable inserts.
  • The point with the throw away liners is that they still dont use the chemicals in them that disposable diapers do, and disposable diapers take hundreds of years to decompose. The throw away liners are entirely biodegradable and you can either flush them in the toilet, compost them (they actually entirely break down within 3 months) or throw them in the garbage to compost at the landfill. The point is, it's no more harmful than toilet paper, gentle on baby's bum, and makes cloth diapering so much easier. We are using gdiapers for this reason which is so easy to use while we're at our cottage, or grandparents houses.

We use the disposable Flip inserts on days that DD needs thick diaper cream (and pocket diapers can't come into contact with most diaper creams).  At home I use cloth wipes to form a barrier, but that's too messy and less foolproof for daycare.

But outside of those few times, I agree that I'd rather just use full cloth.

How do you like the Flip inserts? I just ordered the Flip day pack and plan to use mostly cloth inserts, but I'm sure we'll eventually try disposable when we travel with LO.
