Stay at Home Moms

I had to hold my tongue last night!

We went to a wedding and SIL told me I needed a haircut. Yeah, thanks. I know I do. I told her that I was waiting for some free time because I have a gift card to a place that's pretty upscale and there's no such thing as a quick trim in there. They really pamper you with a massage and a glass of champagne. And a simple cut requires a consultation beforehand with the stylist. I went once and it was easily a 3 hour affair, not to mention the 1/2 hour drive each way.

So then she says "So go. What better do you have to do?" Ummm... How about raising a 2 year old who will not be reasonable spending that long in a stroller while mommy gets a haircut? Not to mention the housework and my schoolwork. Ahhhh... I love talking to people who are single with no kids who think I can just drag my son around to whatever.

Oh, she also called at 8 pm tonight because she wanted to come over and watch TV with us. Sorry... trying to get someone to bed after a full weekend. Ugh.

  • As a former stylist,  THANK YOU for not bringing your child to the salon.  I worked in a very upscale salon for a while and there was nothing worse than clients bringing their kids.  Places like that are not meant for kids.

On another note, wow.  That is about all I can say about the sil's comment.

  • I would've asked her if that was an offer to babysit.  Stick out tongue
  • I too would have asked if that was an offer to babysit Smile

I always wonder how people figure we SAHMs have all this time to do what we want when we have children to "report" to, lol.  Sure, I'll go and get that massage I'm craving while my 2 year old entertains herself at home Tongue Tied

  • Some people are SO clueless as to how much work it is to be a SAHM (or a working mom.... any kind of mom is hard work!) I am SO overdue for a haircut and even at my regular salon it still takes a minimum of 1.5 hours for a cut and highlights. Even finding 1.5 hours is hard. In a few days I'm having dinner with a friend of mine who doesn't have any kids. I kind of dread it. We have nothing in common anymore and I just know that the conversation will be weird.
  • Even if your LO would spend the time in the stroller WHY would you possibly want to be pampered with a toddler around?  I mean, a nice glass of champagne and massage, then oops, let me stroll my 2-yo over to get my haircut.  Seriously?!  That is a mommy only trip.  I do hope you get to go soon!

  • My salon does not allow children.  So I have to schedule it WAY ahead of time on a Saturday when we don't have other plans and DH can watch everyone.

Perhaps she should watch your two year old while you get a haircut for 3 hours and she'll be singing a different tune when you get home:-)  Make sure you schedule it so she doesn't get nap time.

And who tells someone they need a haircut anyway?!

  • If you don't have them you just can't understand.  Also, unfortunately, some people are just rude and inconsiderate, sounds like your SIL fits that bill.  Ignore her.

I totally agree!  I would said, "Wow!  You are totally right!  I schedule my appt. and let you know what time to be over to sit"
