Timing contractions

I feel like an idiot...you're supposed to time them from the start of one to the start of the next, right?  But if one stops and then there is a minute or two before the next one starts, you have to account for the gap, right?  That's how you know how far apart they are?

I'm sure it's not supposed to be this complicated...

  • beginning to next beginning is how far apart they are

to time how long they last, you need to go from beginning of the contraction to the end

the easiest way to do this though is with the website mentioned, the one on the bump, or an iphone app

  • There is an app on the Iphone. I forget though was it you or DH who has an Iphone?
  • Your timing 2 things.

    1) The amount of time from the start of one contraction until the beginning of the next. That is the frequency.

    2) How long each one lasts.

The bump's contraction timer actually is pretty good.

Yeah, he does....too bad he's at work. LOL.

They're coming more often now and are stronger (on top of cramping and lower back pain) so I want to time them. I'm curious to see how close they'll get and how long they will go on!

  • Frequency is from the start of one contraction to the start of the next.  Duration is from the beginning to the end of one contraction.  In the 5-1-1 guideline the frequency should be 5 min, duration should be 1 min, and they should maintain that status for at least 1 hour.

Thanks! I'm still not getting my hopes up, but I figured if they're not going to go away I should at least time them =)

I am currently bouncing on my yoga ball. And earlier I went and walked around Target for an hour.

I wanted to start evening primrose oil tonight but DH vetoed it.

  • I was not scientific with my timing. I used the digital clock on the cable box. Lol. I had a notebook, when I felt one contraction starting, I wrote down the time. Next one, same thing. Just wrote down the time when they started. Then occasionally went back and calculated out the amounts in between each one. So if I had one at 8:00pm and 8:07pm, I would say that was 7 minutes apart. From what I read, thats how it works. You time from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next.
  • When you have a contraction time it on a timer and then every time you have a contraction press the "lap" button.
