We live in an apartment. It is a nice size. We are TTC #2 and can probably get away with living here until baby 2 is 6 months or so.
People look at me like I am NUTS when we say we have one kid and live in an apartment (I don't really share that TTC#2 thing). However, we pay practically nothing in rent, have a washer/dryer, 2 bedrooms, and SIL/BIL are across the hall, it is a pretty sweet deal!
I would just rather save for a bigger down payment than give up this deal for more space...anyone else?
Re: Apartment dwellers, come in!
Right here. We live in an amazing area. We have a HUGE apartment!!! DH and I love it!!!!
Though it would be nice to have a house where we can paint the walls and make it our own. But for now it works.

That is one thing I can't wait to have, when we buy. I have never been able to paint any walls, anywhere. Our current landlord would probably let us but we don't want to have to paint again when we leave!
(I also want a kitchen and bathroom that aren't carpeted, but sacrifices had to be made!)
us too! except i want to move back to home first...but we were planning on getting an apartment for a while there too.
That is just weird. I have never lived in a place where the kitchen and bathroom are carpeted.
Our landlords are pretty chill about the walls as well. DH had fixed a lot of things in our place and the landlords love us for it. He also mows the lawn. And when he does they take off a certain amount off the rent. We have it good for now.
It is 5 apartments in an 1850's house. We have lived in 3 of the 5 apartments (the current one we called Narnia because nobody had ever seen the inside, a hermit lived here before us)...2 of them had carpeted bathroom and kitchen, one did not. Horrible. I hate saying "honey, can you vacuum the kitchen?".
We live in an apartment now and probably will through to the child's first year. It doesn't make sense for us to commit to an area when I could get a job anywhere in the metro area or further.
I have a question for you apartment dwellers: how is it with the baby's crying? Is it ever an issue with the neighbors? I'm also wondering for sleep training, when you might want to let the baby cry a little bit.
We also currently live in an apartment. Its a one bedroom, so we will be switching to a 2 BR when our lease is up (June).
Our neighbor just had a baby, and we can only hear crying if both our windows are open and its silent inside our apartment. I am not too worried about it.
My husband and I currently live in an apartment and we are also TTC. We would be able to buy a house right now, but my main concern with owning a house is when things break we would be responsible for paying to fix it! There is also something to be said about less committment involved with renting. We both would love to move to Colorado someday and if the opportunity presented itself, we would drop everything in our current town and go. With that being said, we do not live near our relatives at all so we would not have help with much of anything, so if the hot water heater(happened last year) goes out, or if the garage door opener motor dies (most recent problem), or if our den feels drafty and we need more insulation blown into our roof(two years ago), it is very nice to be able to just call someone else to come a fix it. We live in a very very nice complex though, so we could probably pay a mortgage for less $ per month than what our rent costs, but we have many reasons to hold off on that major purchase atleast for a few more years. Recently I have been looking into renting a house so that our dog can have a yard. Anyone out there rented a house before? Pros/cons?
DH and I lived in a rental home before. Having the extra space was wonderful, however because its actually someone's home, the landlord was a lot more interested in what we did, as opposed to our apartment where they pretty much leave us alone. We have dogs though, so I can completely understand your want for a yard!
