anyone's LO had RSV?

DS was diagnosed on Wednesday. He went back to the doctor's on Thursday because he was wheezing, and they used a nebulizer on him and then gave us an inhaler to take home to help with his breathing.

He's still wheezing, a lot it seems like, and we've been doing everything we can. He doesn't seem to be in any other discomfort, but I'm wondering if we should call the doctor again?

Anyone else have similar issues? How long did it take for your LO to get better? Did they have similar symptoms, and what did you do?

Re: anyone's LO had RSV?

  • We haven't had RSV yet, but if you have any questions, you may want to ask on the preemie board.  Preemies are especially suceptable to RSV, so those moms have TONS of experience with it.  Hope you LO is feeling better.

  • DS was in the ER 3x and then admitted to the hospital for two nights over the past week due to RSV.  Check his belly to see if he is "pulling" hard when he breathes.  You'll see it under his ribcage or at his throat.  Also keep a close watch for his lips and around the mouth turning blue-ish.  If he seems to be needing to work hard to breathe or if his color is bad, call the Ped or go to urgent care to have his oxygen saturation levels checked.

If he is just congested, we found that running the shower and letting him sit in the steam bath helped.  If you can get some Eucalyptus oil, or a Shower Soother  and drop that in the tub while running the shower (close the drain) that seemed to help DS a ton.    Vick's has a night light that emits vapors that you could try, too, in the bathroom.  Our ped also emphasized using plenty of saline in the nose -- before every feeding and before every nap.  If it's settled into his chest, you can gently thump his chest and back with a cupped hand to help break up the mucus.  At the hospital they had him sleep with his head and chest elevated quite a bit.  At home, we are having him sleep in his cradle swing.

I'm sorry about your LO.  RSV sucks.  I hope he feels better soon!

  • Karenbird - thanks for this info! This really puts my mind at ease. DS doesn't sound this bad - he's wheezing, but no real trouble breathing. When they checked his oxygen saturation levels on Thursday they were perfectly fine. I think we will try the steam, though, on top of the humidifier/saline drops/bulb aspirator combo we have going. He has been sleeping in his cradle swing, too. I wouldn't have though of breaking up the mucus that way, either.

I'm sorry about your LO! I can't imagine how stressful that would be. I hope he's doing better and has no more trips to the ER!

  • I'm glad he's doing well.  It just hits them so hard when they're little, but being 4 months vs. 3 months is a big difference, I think.  Keep an eye on him,  and consider doing a "color check" when he's in a deep sleep, which is when they have the hardest time (turn on the lights, take out the paci, and make sure his mouth area color is rosy...no need to wake him).    C. got this about 10 days ago, and today his lungs are clear, and there's very little coughing.  Your LO should be back to 100% in no time!  :-)
  • ds had rsv at 6 months old.  it sucked.  it took 2 full weeks of nebulizing every 4 hours before he was better.  he used it before bed for about a month.  now just about a year later he still gets wheezy when sick, but fine.  it's something that there is a chance that it can become a long term issues, but there is also the chance that they recover and never have another breathing issues.  it's scary and i am hoping that you have a speedy recovery.
  • DS had RSV when he was 4 months old -- it was our first and only trip thus far to the ER.  PP had great advice on how to check for real difficulty breathing, beyond wheezing.  Zach's wheezing went on forever -- at least 6 months.  Our situation was complicated by the fact that asthama runs in DH's family, and that history with early RSV infection placed DS at high risk for developing childhood asthama himself.  It finally was cleared up when he was put on Singulair when he was close to a year old.  It was scary for me, but he never had any side effects from the wheezing (decreased activity levels or anything).  He just sounded horrible.

  • My son was diagnosed w/RSV right around Christmas.  We opted for the vortex chamber and albuterol inhaler instead of the nebulizer, and he had to use that every 4 hours for 2 weeks.  He was better for a few days, but has been congested, coughing and w/a runny nose for days again.  Per the advice of the nurse, we started using the albuterol again, but it wasn't helping much.  I just took him to the pedi again yesterday and he is on an antibiotic for 10 days, but she doesn't think it's RSV again. HTH!
