LO won't latch...frustrated.

It's only been a week or so, but I'm having a really hard time getting LO to latch.  We were doing really well until 2 days ago.  She would latch for 15-30 on one side before she was done, but now she wants nothing to do with the breast.  I've been pumping to try to keep my supply up, and I'm happy that she's at least getting my breast milk from a bottle, but I'd really love for her to get the hang of latching on.  I'm not ready to give up, but I'm completly frustrated at the same time.

Any advice?  I really don't want to have to hire a lactation consultant...

TIA!

Re: LO won't latch...frustrated.

  • I've only had my LOs for a few days so I'm not much practical help, but I would recommend hiring a LC if you have the means. They were very helpful to me in the hospital. Also, bottles are much easier for babies to drink from, so if you are giving her bottles she may not want the breast because it is a lot harder for her to get milk from. My un-expert advice would be to do your best not to giver any bottles and constantly be offering her your breast.

I was having a lot of trouble latching one of my LOs and the LC said to get him naked, skin on skin instead of bundled. That did help some. I don't know your situation though.

  • Call the hospital or LLL. You need to speak with someone if you want to continue BFing. I was able to get a referral from my pedi to a breastfeeding resource center. Consultation with the LC was $125, $100 of which my insurance reimbursed, and now I can consult her anytime. It's worth it if you're serious about BFing, and 1 week is a bit early to give up without a fight.

  • I had the same issue. I purchased a nipple shield from BRU (or target) and my LO did great. He was also able to wean from it fairly quickly because I was pretty proactive about wanting him on my breast and not silicone. It was a miracle though...pretty much kept my BF dream alive once it worked.
