Selling your Breast Milk!?

Why do I find the weirdest things on Craig's List? There is a lady selling her Breast Milk for a dollar an ounce. I know BM is "best" and its not unheard of to donate BM to the hospital for NICU babies. But selling it?! Maybe its just me but this add just sounds really creepy.

Re: Selling your Breast Milk!?

  • the weird thing would be someone buying a strangers BM, if you really want some you can get it through donation like you said, and its pasturized and tested for diseases.

    yuck

  • I've heard of selling breast milk before.  Though I don't know if I would buy breast milk off of Craig's List myself.  I do believe there are reputable places that sell breast milk, but there's no way I'm buying milk off some lady on the internet.  My friend had so much breast milk that she donated tons of it to the local hospital.
  • That does seem odd to me, but I will say that after pumping at work for almost a year, it is most definitely worth $1/oz or maybe more.
  • eeeewww....

  • Ew! That's just nasty - I can't imagine handling someone else's breastmilk, let alone a perfect stranger! People think of the wierdest things.
  • Thats weird. I know there are milk banks , where you can purchase milk if you aren't able to breast feed.
  • Super creepy! I'm gonna be a BM and if the adoptive family doesn't want my breast milk I was going to donate it, but to sell it is just weird!
  • That's just...ew. And very creepy. I would never sell or buy someone else's BM.

  • The thought of my baby drinking someone else's BM really grosses me out.  Even though I know it's better, and as long as the person isn't diseased or a druggie that there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, I couldn't see myself giving my baby someone else's milk.

Some of these comments are getting out of hand.  I'm glad my daycare providers didn't feel this way.  We're not talking about toxic chemicals people.  Calm down.

  • LOL wow! that sounds a little creepy to me too :/

I agree. I was a nanny for two kids and the mom expressed her BM for me to feed to her baby. I didn't think this was gross. I was just pointing out the fact that selling your BM on Craig's List was kinda strange.

  • well, first of all, you don't know the person and, for all you know, it could be from their dog. Gruesome, I know, but true and that makes it all the creepier.

Also, you have no idea what the person has or if they're on drugs so you really have no idea what is in the BM.

What in the person's right mind (if they have such a thing) makes them think someone will buy it?

Then again, people sell themselves on there, so I guess you can sell anything on Craig's List.

  • Craigslist is obviously not the appropriate forum for selling breast milk. She should give it to a milkbank and donate it to Haiti.

  • A family member of mine actually bought breastmilk from a reputable milk bank when they adopted their daughter and paid $5 an ounce!!! Crazy!

I would never sell mine, I think you can just donate it to the milk bank and they sell some to pay for expenses, and the majority does go to hospitals and NICUs.
