Infertility

Funny Story (a little TMI, though)

I think we can all agree that IF sucks.  It more than sucks.  But we have to try to find humor when and where we can during this difficult time.

My husband is from Barcelona, and when he came here just under five years ago, he didn't speak a lick of English.  Now, he's basically fluent (with a sexy Spanish accent, I might add), but some vocabulary trips him up.  I have immense amounts of respect and adoration for him for coming here to be with me.

Anyway... our Dx was MFI with very low counts, motility, morphology, etc. We are proceeding forward with IVF with ICSI right now, but in parallel he is seeing a urologist that specializes in fertility.  About a week ago he was scheduled to have an u/s of his prostate.  He came home and was stressing out about it and said that he had to make sure he went to the pharmacy to pick up some sort of "pill" that the doctor wanted him to take the morning of the u/s.

"A pill?," I asked.  "Is it for pain or something?"

He said, "I don't know.  It is some sort of pill called an 'enema'".

I couldn't help myself... I burst out laughing.  I tried to explain to him what it was, but I didn't know how to explain it in Spanish, so I went to Google Images and pulled up a pic of an enema package.  He looked absolutely horrified!

Needless to say, the next morning he followed through without complaint, and I love him dearly for this, but that was definitely a funny moment.

  • Oh poor dh. I can't imagine what was going through his mind when you showed him what an enema really is.

Yeah, he really is a good sport through this all.  This morning he turned to me and said, "Thank you for everything you have to go through so that we can start our family."  Aww!!

  • Poor guy! lol What a trooper for going through with it...he deffinately gets brownie points for that one.

On the same topic of enemas: We once had a male patient tell us he was having trouble preping for a barium enema, which required a Fleet prep kit...which is usually an enema itself. We asked him what the problem was and he said he couldn't keep the prep down, we asked him what he ment and he said "Every time I drink it I just throw it right back up". It was all I could do not to burst out laughing, picturing this guy drinking the enema. Turns out after some investigation there was a part that you were supposed to drink and that is what was upsetting his system. Oops :)

  • how funny!

My H is a first generation American of Mexican descent and many things are lost in translation for him too. He grew up speaking only Spanish and mixes things up a lot. He had that same u/s and I had to explain what an enema was to him, the look on his face was priceless!
