Buying groceries for nanny?

I'm back to work this week and since she will be here from 7-3:30 each day, I thought it would be a good idea to have breakfast, lunch and snack items in the house for her. Any thoughts?

Re: Buying groceries for nanny?

  • I def would. I would ask her what she likes.

  • Can you maybe ask her what types of foods she likes and dislikes? The family that I nanny for has a complete opposite taste of what I like.
  • Yes, you should definitely be providing food for her. You could ask what she likes. Or, you could ask if she's open to this: When I nannied, I did the grocery shopping for them (it was actually a great, guaranteed activity for getting the baby out of the house). They would either provide a list, or a partial list and then let me get things for my own meals. They had a weekly budget and a credit card for me to use. It worked well for all of us because I knew I'd have food I wanted/liked, and they got their shopping done :)
  • When we hired out nanny we told her she is welcome to anything in the house, I do not buy special food for her, she probably brings her lunch 75% of the time.

  • I emailed her and this is how she responded:

"instant oatmeal or cereal- Kix, Cheerios, or Raisin Bran for breakfast, pb&j or leftovers for lunch, and snacks dried fruit- raisins or chips- Cheez Its.  I don't drink much soda, usually water or o.j."

Oh crap. If I buy her Cheez Its, the box will be gone before her first day!! LOL

  • Our nanny does some of the grocery shopping too and either brings her own food or picks up some things.  I think she likes to get out of the house.
  • I asked our nanny what she wanted, and I think she felt funny giving me a list of food so she just said she likes everything.  She brings her lunch most of the time, but I always have drinks on hand, soup, and pretzels or something similar to snack on.  I don't want to buy tpo much extra food because I will eat it if it's here.  If she were going to be here for breakfast (our nanny gets here at 9am) I'd probably buy cereal, yogurt, instant oatmeal, etc.
