Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How do you know if your kid is ready for preschool?

What are the signs that they are ready for some type of preschool?

  • Here they start actual preschool at age 3.

  • I am sending my son in September - so he'll be 2 1/2.  A lot of my friends sent their kids the fall when they were 1 (so most of them the way their birthdays fell were 18 months to 21 months).  I felt that was too young and since pre-school ran from 9-1 and Joseph was napping at 11:30/12, he wasn't ready at all.  Now he naps later and has no problem staying with sitters or being dropped off at Mother's Morning Out at the YMCA.  He's super social and LOVES being around kids his age.  Some of my friends are holding off another year because their kids have some more attachment issues than my son does.  I think every kid is different but most are probably ready by age 3.

  • How is preschool at 2 any different than PT daycare or MDO?
  • In my area, for preschool, the child must be three by Sept 1st for the 2 day/week program (usually private schools and Early Childhood/Family Education) and for public preschool they must be 4 by Sept 1st. There isnt anything before age 3 that isnt just part of daycare.

It really isn't much different.  They learn to sit in a circle when it's time to sit in a circle and stuff like that.

I'll be sending Madeleine two mornings a week (9-12) starting when she's two and a half.  I'm doing it because it will give her a change from her mommy-centric world and it will give me some alone time with the baby.
