Breastfeeding

lazy sucker

hey ladies,

So it lookes like I have a lazy sucker on my hands. She feeds at the breast but isn't really pulling much out. So she at 2.5 weeks old isn't putting on as much weight as they would like. We are feeding from the breast every 3 hrs. and then supplementing with 1 oz of formula or pumped milk.

was wondering if anyone else was having this problem and when the LO became a better sucker and you were able to go back to only the breast.

also does anyone else's nipples kill when they go out into the cold?

Re: lazy sucker

  • I have the same problem, only I also have almost no milk supply.Probably because she wasn't sucking enough to stimulate production.

I have been seen by doctors and a LC and they all have different advice. No one seems to have a solution for the sucking problem except to tell me it may get better as she gets older and more alert. While I wait I am fighting like mad to get some milk in.

I feel for you . It sucks to have a feeding problem that the baby has to figure out on it's own and you can't really do anything about.

  • We're still dealing with it but the LC says it's because she's not big/strong enough to have stamina to suck for long enough to get the amount of BM she needs. One thing we do is switch sides a lot during a feeding. It kind of wakes her up and gets her attention. When she slows down to where she's not doing much, I put her on the other side. We'll do this the entire time.
  • We went through this.   LO was born at 36 weeks and he was soooooo sleepy and lazy. He ended up losing about a pound and the Drs and LC got a little concerned.  I'd nurse him for 15 minutes on each side and then DH would give him a bottle of BM.  I recommend to you to pump for 15 minutes while DH is feeding your LO so that you continue to make enough milk.  My LC said to do this to protect my supply.  And my personal recommendation (FWIW) is to supplement with pumped BM and not use formula.  Pump and give him what you pump.

He got better each week. We met with a LC every other day and then once a week.  This past week, when he was finally technically term, he was over his birth weight significantly and ate 2.5 oz at the breast.  So, they get better as they get older.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.  It was a difficult month with him but it does get better.

  • My DD is a lazy sucker sometimes too, I use a inverted nipple shield to help her along and then take it off and she will feed without it. Just keep at it and 'm sure your LO will get better. I was reminded that they are learning the same way we are.

  • Hi...I can't help with your first question but my nipples do kill when I get cold. I try to dress very warmly for this reason alone. However, 6 weeks, they seem to be getting better...maybe more tough? I just noticed that DH had lowered our thermostat to 69 after getting the electric bill...NOT going to happen. It's too painful...we can cut back other places !
  • Thanks so much! it is so good to hear from someone who it is actually working for. We have a dr appoint again on tuesday for a weight check. hopefully she will gain enough finally to not have to keep waking her up for feedings.

I am pretty impatient by nature so it has been really hard for me to keep in mind that it takes time.
