Pack n Play or something else for outside?

We are planning on doing a pack n play in our bedroom for LO to sleep in the first few months.  We have a pool in the backyard and will be spending a lot of time out there.  I'm starting to think that breaking down the PnP and dragging it outside all the time might be a PITA.  Do you think a second PnP (with a shade) is the best option or is there something else that I don't know about that would work better outside?  We would be using it as a place to contain LO, not really for sleeping.

Re: Pack n Play or something else for outside?

  • We are probably only getting one PnP, but I can see the use in having two, or at least a playpen with a shade.  We have a playpen already that will stay at Grandma's house, and I think there's already one at the cottage, but yes, dragging that thing in and out would be a PIA.  ::Waits for others to chime in::

  • A moses basket would be good for a while... but I don't know how long those can contain a baby... I think they might be just for newborns.

  • We had a different situation - by the time it was warm enough to be pool time, my dd was at least 6-7 months old and was on a good nap schedule.  She'd sleep for 2-3 hours in the afternoon.  We have a screened in porch so we would put her in her swing while she slept and we played :)

I have a play yard - it doesn't have all the pnp bells and whistles but I don't remember it being that big of a deal to move it.  It's been a while so I could be off but it seemed skinny enough to make it through the door.  But maybe getting it to the door is the hassle?  Not sure.

  • They have bouncers, that have a zipped mesh outer part, we go campping alot and it was perfect for my son when he was a baby and i definetly invest in one with this baby.  They are wonderful and not large at all
  • get a second pack and play off craigslist, so you dont care as much if it gets dirty outside

  • we often drug ours around room to room & even outside.?
  • Get another!  Pretty much every Graco Pack n Play review I've read said it was a huge PITA to take it apart or travel anywhere with it.  So we got a Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light (it works until they are 3, I think) for the basement, for travel and esp. for when we travel to Grandma's (we're using this instead of a second crib at that house).  Its more of a play pen, and the bottom of it does touch the ground.  But it sets up in 7 seconds flat, and is folded up even faster.  Its amazing, really.  It is more expensive, though--we found it brand new on craigslist for a good deal.  If you live in a larger city, I'd bet you would have an easier time finding one than I did.

For outside, though (camping, DH's outdoor activities, etc), we got a Graco Pack N Play Sport.  It is more like a tent, with a mesh covering on top.  I found it on craigslist for $40. They are discontinued, so the only way to get them is on ebay or through craigslist, etc.  They have supurb reviews from parents who think it is genuinely ridiculous that Graco quit making them.  The girl I bought it from said she adored it.

  • Oh, and the great thing with the Pack N Play Sport is that you can use it much, much longer.  They can use it as a tent way past when they can use it as a play pen.  I think the girl I bought it from said she used it up till her son was around 5.

It's called a peapod, it looks like it'd work for what you want, and some of the reviews talk about taking it to the beach and it's got UV protection, and sounds really easy to move around.

  • Your LO won't be crawling this summer so you can probably just use a blanket in the shade or a moses basket or whatever. It won't need a whole "cage". Plus you'll probably just be holding it anyway. Also just a little baby seat/bouncer/swing thing would do the trick.

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions!  You ladies gave me a lot to think about.  I know LO won't be mobile this summer, but being in SE Texas, our winter is very short and our pool is heated.  LO will be poolside in no time!  The pack n play sport looks awesome...I will be looking into finding one of those!  The moses basket or bouncer may be good options for when he is a newborn.  Thanks again!
