car seat check and bundle me - thoughts?

so we went today to have the carseats checked. Where we live in LI the police don't do it, the NTSB does it.  so the guy that did it for us today said no bundle me!!!  he was really against it - they are on my table to return to buy buy baby, but part of me feels like he may have been a little exttreme (he also said no snow suits, head positioners etc) I have heard about no bundle me vaguely here and there - any of you heard the same?

Re: car seat check and bundle me - thoughts?

  • Did he say why? I could see the problem if you don't use the bases but with the bases for the carseats I don't see a problem.

  • anything that didn't come with the seat is not tested to be safe.  he said it adds extra padding to the seat and that is not how it was safey tested.  :(
  • He's right, unfortunately.  If it didn't come with the carseat, they can't guarantee the safety.

This is especially true for snowsuits, winter jackets, and anything else that allows there to be too much room btwn baby and strap.  We are, admittedly, not very good about the winter coat thing.

  • There was a post on the Nurseries and baby gear board to photos on another board showing why Bundle Me's aren't safe.  A woman put a bundle me on a car seat and tightened the straps so you couldn't pinch the strap at all (how it should be).  Then she left the straps alone and removed the Bundle Me, put her baby back in and she could easily pinch a good inch or more on all of the straps because of the gap the Bundle Me created between the back of it and the padding of the actual car seat.  It's completely unsafe.

Some women have cut the backs out of them, but after seeing those pictures, we decided to just stick with layering and blankets in cold weather.  Those pictures scared the crap out of me.

  • Oh well that's why I was confused. We don't have a bundle me that has a lining on the inside. We use a $15 dollar version from wal-mart called a cozy cover that just slips over the top of the carseat. There's nothing that impedes with the straps at all so no issue with the straps fitting any different.

  • With my DD, we used the shower cap-style cover (by Kiddopotamus) that just goes over the top of the seat.  We were also told that Bundle Mes (or anything that goes under the baby or under the straps) are not safe -- basically the fabric can compress in an accident, leaving the straps wayyy too loose.

  • I've heard this about the bundle me & snowsuits and such.  I am still keeping my bundle me's to use only when the seats are in the stroller...assuming they aren't too much of a PITA to put on and off (?)

Anyone know if it's the same deal w/ the snuzzler?  The snuzzler goes around the straps (it's actually two pieces - one for the head and one for the body) and looks like it'd help keep smaller babies put.  It also says it's car safety tested...but you never know.

  • We were told the same thing during their car seat challenge, it's not safe if it doesn't come with the seat originally. We couldn't use them to bring them home in cause the hospital wouldn't allow it. We ended up returning them and getting really warm blankets, it sucks but better safe than sorry although I may look into the one mentioned at walmart that is shower cap style over the seat (it sounds great).
  • I think the Snuzzler is the same deal, unfortunately.  OK to use when the carseats are not in the car, but otherwise a supposed no-no.

  • Shower cap style are safe and should be removed during travel. Bundle me's are not considered safe during travel. Neither are mirrors placed in your car to see the baby. Anything that ca be a projectile should be removed. Car seat safety advisors are very conservative.

WOW!  That is VERY scary.  I am so happy that I haven't put them in our seats yet and won't now for travel.  I will use the BM's only for when we go on walks around the neighborhood and not while driving anywhere.  Thank you for posting this!!
