2nd Trimester

For those worried about not gaining enough weight.

I just went to my 16week OB appt today, and Ive only gained 2 pounds. I asked about weight gain, because there seems to be alot of questions on this topic lately. She said that some people just don't gain a ton of weight, and that's totally normal. I asked if it will effect breast feeding, and she said, Ideally they like to see a weight gain of at least 18 pounds, especially if you are on the slender side. But she said she has seen women who have lost weight because of morning sickness and have an overload of breast milk. She also preformed an ultrasound and baby looks really healthy and measuring right on schedule. AND!!! he/she did a somersault, it was amazing! So don't worry if you aren't gaining weight, everyone is different. Just how we all show/pop at different times, we will all gain weight differently as well.

  • Good to know.  I finally started gaining weight recently, but now I'm worried it'll become a runaway train.  The worries never end...lol!

  • Thanks. I'm still only +3 yet the bump is growing. My husband is starting to bug me about it but I'm eating normally. Good to know.

    hahaha please share.Smile

  • I was only up 4 lbs at my 22 week appointment and my doc didn't say a thing about it. So I asked her if I should be worried. She said as long as the baby is growing fine she's not concerned about my total weight gain. Some women's metabolism's just handle pregnancy differently. ALthough having started out on the higher end of my normal weight range, I really didn't think I would be in this boat! No complaints though :)

You are not supposed to be eating normally.  You are supposed to be eating an extra 300 calories/day.

300 calories is hardly anything at all!  At any rate I had/have such bad morning sickness that I'm still WAY down (over 10 pounds).  My doctor isn't concerned since I've stopped losing.

  • I actually lost weight (10 pounds) since my last visit one month ago.  I have been going to town on food (give me ice cream or give me death!) and was a bit over weight before my pregnancy to begin with (thank you MIL for your oh-so-good-oh but oh-so-bad-for-you cooking during your 3 mo visit!) but in my book it says that during the second trimester the 'quickening' and weight loss gradually starts then picks up more during 3 trimester in total you should gain about 30 pounds (give or take).  There is a chart in "What to Expect When You're Expecting" of what all that weight is.
  • Thanks for the info!
I've only gained 2-3 lbs depending on what day you catch me, but there is a bump noticeable.
It's worried me as well...so thanks!
  • I haven't gained any weight yet and my doctor told me that is fine. She said it's perfectly normal to gain the weight in the end of the pregnancy.

Realized I put weight loss not gain, you gain weight....

  • I have only gained one pound so far. My OB has not made a big deal about it, because she knows I'm eating a lot.
