Our dog is a little over a year old. She is/was potty trained. Hadn't had an accident in a long time. We keep her on a schedule (I stay home) so am able to take her out many times a day.
About 1-2 months ago she stopped wanting to do her business outside. It started out that it was taking her a little longer and longer to get busy but now she won't even go outside. She sits in front of the door. If she does step outside she sits there and looks at me. And the second we come back inside she pee's right by the door.
When we go for our walk (around late afternoon) she goes and does her business and everything is dandy. But I need help/ideas with getting her to go in the backyard again.
Re: Dog owners-need help with re-potty training
A lot of times it's a health problem if their potty habits change like that. I would go see your vet.
If not then try rewarding her with a tasty treat when she goes outside for a few weeks.
Is there any sort of punishment when she goes inside? If one of our dogs has an accident (which hasn't happened in a long time), we put them in their crate after admonishing them. That's how we trained one of our beagles (who had never been potty trained as a puppy and ALWAYS went inside his owners house rather than outside). He caught on real fast.
It could also be your dog's way of wanting to go for more walks rather than being let outside.

Best way I know how to fix it is to start over at the beginning & potty train all over again.
Crate training or the tethering method are my favorite options. Both can be found on Google.
The Pets board on the Nest will probably have someone that's dealt with this & will for sure have helpful suggestions as well.
Good luck!
ETA: Nevermind...I see you've already posted there!
We clean up the poop regularly and she's got plenty of places to choose from.

Thanks! I posted on the pets board but it seems kinda slow over there so I thought I'd try here to! I think starting over is a good idea. Just start from square one and see where we can get from there.
This.
Thank you! That's a good idea. I'm gonna give a call to her vet.
We had to retrain our dogs when our schedules changed. They were fine when one of us was home but once I started working 9-5 instead of retail part time, they would pee in the house. It made sense because when we originally "trained" them there was someone to take them out every time they wanted to go, they never had to wait.
So we just started all over again. We crate trained and kept them tethered to us on a leash inside the house until they learned to go outside and to WAIT to go outside if no one is home. They do awesome now -- it was just a matter of showing them that someone would let them out at lunch and when we got home, just not every hour like we once could. Make sure to give her a really yummy treat when she does go outside. GL
I'd rule out bladder issues/UTI.
Once that's done, I'd go outside w/ her to make sure she's going potty & stay out there w/ her until she's done. When you aren't home, crate her.

I trained my 6week yorkie with a bell..she is now almost 2yrs old and still hits the bell when she has to potty...
i got her when she was 6wks old had her potty trained fully by 8wks
so u could try a bell...and i never got onto ours for potting in the house...
1-Talk to your vet to rule out other health problems such as UTI etc.
2- Clean the house with enzymatic cleaner where she has pottied (such as Nature's Miracle). This will not only rid the smell and stain to you, but the smell to her so she doesn't sniff that spot and smell herself and think its okay to go there. Enzymatic Cleaner is the only way to get out the smell to her (even though you can't smell it she still can)
3- When you see her squat to go in your house, hurry her outsie and say "potty outside"
4- You may have to walk her on a leash around the backyard for awhile until she goes now (until she is re-trained)
5- Every time she goes outside (even on a walk) give her a treat and praise her big time...think praise like its the best thing ever. Even have a special treat that she only gets for potty outside such as teeny cheese chunks or warmed up hot dog. Something very enticing.
Also, has anything in the backyard changed recently? Is she ever out there alone/unsupervised? If so, it could be a scared issue. Dogs feel very vulnerable when they go potty to begin with, and going outside actually makes them feel moreso until they are used to it. If something happened outside while she was pottying once she may not feel safe enough to go so its even more important that you go with her on a leash, give her lots and lots of time to sniff and prise like crazy and treat afterward. It'll make the experience positive again.
Same here. Ours wouldn't go and acted like she didn't want to and all last winter we just blamed it on the cold weather (she hates it) well it went away and then come spring time it started to happen again and sure enough it was a really bad bladder stone and she had to have emergency surgery! Take her to the vet doggies don't forget potty training.
Sorry! I just saw that you posted your plan. Sounds good to me
Just don't forget to clean with the enzymatic cleaner as well
Let us know how it goes!!
Please DON'T scold your dog for going to the bathroom inside and please DON'T use her crate as a place for punishment.
Some dogs don't like going to the bathroom without being walked. You might need to put her on a leash and walk her around the backyard. When we want our dogs to pee in the backyard, I say "go potty" and wait outside in the cold with them. We don't go inside until they at least squat to go pee. When they do pee outside, they still get treats. (They are 3 and 6).
Even when we do our morning and afternoon walk, any time someone pees or poops, they get praised. Be consistent with your positive reinforcement and be willing to start housetraining from scratch.
The tether method (having her on leash in the house with the end on your write) works to reduce accidents. A dog that has to pee will pee anywhere, so if she is still going with you standing right there, there's most likely a physical problem.
If you catch her peeing (and it's not a physical problem), just interrupt her and see if you can get her outside to finish. If not, please don't scold her or punish her (this only encourages her to hide where she pees).
It sounds to me like your dog just doesn't like being outside - I think you being with her (outside) will encourage her to pee out there. Good luck!
