High-Risk Pregnancy

29 week GD u/s ?

I just got diagnosed with GD and have been scheduled for an u/s tomorrow.  What are they looking for?  Just checking to see if the baby is big?  Will they continue to do u/s throughout the pregnancy? Thanks!

Re: 29 week GD u/s ?

  • It might be different depending on your provider, but yeah, my u/s was checking for growth, and they're going to do one per month.  That seems pretty standard for GD and other high risk stuff from what I've read here, but like I said, it could be different in your case.  Good luck and congrats on getting to see your LO tomorrow. • Yes they will check the baby and give you a weight and %tile. I get a growth u/s every four weeks for a few high risk issues, but I think they still do them for GD alone. GL! It's a fun appt always great to see the baby!
  • Yup.  I had one when I found out, I had one 4 weeks later, just yesterday, and I will have one more in 4 weeks, 2/10, all to check the size of the baby!

  • They are looking to see the size of baby.  Babies of GD patients tend to be on the bigger side which can cause problems.  If he's bigger now, then he might grow too big.

They will measure his head and his shoulder size.

  • I'm in the SAME boat as you- had my appt with the dietician today, and growth u/s scheduled for tomorrow morning!!!

I'm nervous, since I think LO is going to be "big" for his age (at least that's how I feel- that he's big!! LOL)... but it will be awesome to see him again!

  • They also look at the placenta to make sure it looks okay.  GD can make your placenta look "old" before 40 weeks, although I never bothered to ask how they know what to look for in an "old" placenta....

They also double-check your amniotic fluid levels, but I think they do that on every u/s, not just the GD growth ones.

  • I had a growth u/s after getting diagnosed, but now I have BPP's every week.  During the BPP they measure the fluid levels, listen to the cord, look at the placenta, monitor the baby's movements, check the fetal heart rate, and about a million other things.  The BPP's are pretty in depth.

You may initially be having a growth u/s and then BPP's later on down the road.
