I'm feeling really bad. I didn't eat deli meat at all with my first. For some reason I really crave it. I had a turkey sandwich yesterday and a roast beef today....am I awful?
Nope. I have it in moderation. I did throw out the stuff I bought a month ago - and some that expired a month ago. I didn't feel the need to eat those!
I'm not eating it. It was one of the few things that my doc said to really avoid and I trust her judgement. Some docs say that it is ok, but mine has had three patients lose babies because of listeria late in pregnancy so she is pretty vocal about it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I had a turkey sandwich a couple of days ago and I'm still beating myself up about it. It's nice to know there are other pregnant women out there eating deli meat. :-)
I've had Subway a couple of times. My doc said that it's okay, the risks are very minimal but, just to be safe, she suggests buying the packaged stuff and eating it within a day or two. I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow and I'm definitely going to purchase some, sounds yummy!
I only eat it if its heated in the microwave to steaming hot. Interesting responses on here--I love the one about the "three heads" and then the one right afterwards about a Dr. losing 3 of his patient's babies to listeria.
I realize that people have very different opinions on this (including among physicians) but please at least be aware of what the actual risks are before you choose to disregard medical advice:
I'm curious - genuinely and not in a snarky way! If doctors are so split on things (like deli meat) what makes us take the word of OUR doctor. So for example - those of you who have doctors who say no deli meat. If that same doctor had told you it was ok, would you eat it?
I just always wonder why we only trust the judgement of our own personal doctors. I don't know mine from a whole in the wall so I guess I really can't know that his/her judgement is better than YOUR doctor's, right?
If you cut it out but still crave it I would try Tofurkey "roasted turkey" lunch meat. It's vegan and totally safe.
Not trying to preach my veganism here but seriously you won't be able to tell a difference. When I still craved meat years ago I'd eat this and be satisfied.

Very true. That's why I prefer on occassion to ask around about certain things (like medications), to see if other physicians generally seem to think its ok or not. I think Dr. opinions on this subject seem to vary alot too based on their personal experiences with the bacteria. Those who have had patients lose their babies from it are obviously going to be stronger advocates of not eating deli meat/reheating it than those who have never had a patient get the bacteria and suffer through that kind of a loss.
one place I would most definately NOT eat deli meat from would be Subway! YUCK! THere meat sits out all day, grant it, it's refrigerated but it's still "out in the open". I eat deli meat only if it's sliced from a new piece or pre-packaged and eat it within two days.
I know someone who lost their baby because of listeria, and the risk is most definately NOT worth it for me.
I am not anal about what I eat, but I pay close attention. It's only 9 months out of my life, it ain't going to kill me to not eat certain things for that short amount of time. Do I have crazy cravings for raw sushi and wine, heck yeah but I want to make sure 100% that I am doing everything right for my unborn child!
I don't eat it. Honestly, I didn't eat it before I was prego unless I was in a "have to" situation-ie: MIL forcing her dry turkey sandwiches on me when we travel with them. My DR has always said it was a no-go unless heated.
I am very much looking forward to medium-rare steak again.
Nope, this baby craves meat! I've had ham, salami, pastrami, corned beef...
I didn't eat it with DD, but I'm so much more laid back in this pregnancy. Now, I wouldn't go grab a sandwich off a convenience store shelf or anything, but deli meat from the grocery store or a reputable deli, no problem!
I either stick it in the microwave or have the sub toasted...at subway they have like a flash toaster where the sub goes in for 20 seconds. My doctor never said I couldn't have it...but I'm cautious anyway.

I eat deli meat too.
My OB said unless you're buying it opened from some grubby guy on the street, you're ok
A lot of women on here say that their doc says if you know where it comes from you should be ok. (A good clean place)
My doc however said I should avoid it.
I miss lunch meat....I can't wait to eat it again to be honest. I am always on the safer said and I won't touch it....although I miss it very much.

not at all. I think there are just so many opinions out there.. you'll get some doctors say no and some that say anything in moderation is ok.
My dr falls under the no category unfortunately. I would give anything to have a turkey and cheese sandwhich right now too!!
My doc says no lunch meat unless I heat it.
Unfortunately, heating it defeats the purpose when all you want is a nice crisp, cold sub.
So, I try to go to places where the meat is fresh sliced and eat it immediately.
I'll let you know when my kid comes out with 6 arms and 3 eyes.

And an insatiable craving for freshly sliced roast beef.
BTW, I eat it, too.
