High-Risk Pregnancy

2 vessel umbilicol cord

At my 22 week check-up, my doctor informed me that my umbilicol cord only has 2 vessels instead of 3. She said at 32 weeks we will do another ultrasound to check his heart and kidneys for defects. If anyone else had this problem, please give me more info and if your baby was ok!!!

Re: 2 vessel umbilicol cord

  • I have this problem too. You get the extra heart and kidney check and then u/s growth monitoring throughout. Her heart and kindeys were all fine and so far her growth checks have been normal.

It seems really scary and DONT read on the internet. BUT all the doctors I have talked to said it was very easily managed and can be totally normal.

Obviously I haven't had her yet, but so far everything has checked out and you just get to see the baby a bit more :)

There is a post down a few with the same issue. GL I am sure you will be fine! I posted when I found out and got lots of positive stories from babies that had been born :)

  • Thank you so much! I have already made the mistake of looking on the internet! A lot of the things I read really wasn't too bad. My doctor said he is growing normal right now so my worries are starting to go away!
  • My baby has this. They call it Single Umbilical Artery (SUA).  I did research and freaked out at first, but after talking to my doctor and my L&D Nurse mother, these aren't all that rare, and often result in a perfectly normal, healthy baby.

That being said, they are going to keep a closer eye on you.  Starting at 32 weeks, I have twice-week NonStress Tests (NST), weekly Biophysical Profiles (BPP), and monthly growth check ultrasounds.  At 26 weeks we had to have an echocardiogram and a growth check as well.  My baby is usually non-reactive during her NST, so I get BPPs even more often than we planned.

So far, my baby seems to be perfectly fine.  The tests are frustrating and exhausting, but it is nice to have constant reassurance that she is okay.  My doctor mentioned that they may induce me a week early because of the SUA and the non-reactive NSTs, but everyone assume she will be perfectly okay.

Good Luck.  I think everything will be fine.

  • I posted below about my experience w/ Connor's SUA.  We got a little more attention during the pg than I did with my 1st, and everything turned out perfectly.  Good luck!
  • Worse.case.scenario...see siggy.  Don't know if they were all related to SUA.  Good luck.

  • My 6 year old son had this and they did not detect it on the 20 week US.  It was discovered at birth.  He is perfectly fine, they did send the cord away for testing but I am not evens sure what they were testing for.  He was born at 35 weeks and 3 days and weighed 5 pds even.  I also know a friend whose daughter had this and is a normal 12 year old.
  • Someone I know had this and her baby was perfectly fine.

  • We discovered that DD had this at our 20 week u/s.  We had growth u/s every 4 weeks and they paid close attention to her heat and kidneys.  I was in the same boat as you and was very nervous and stressed out about it at first.  I googled and prepared myself for the worse case scenario.  My OB repeatedly told me not to worry about it and that if anything she may not grow as much in the 3rd trimester.  DD was born at 35 weeks weighing 6 lbs 12 oz so the SUA did not appear to affect her growth at all.  She is perfectly fine.  I would try not to worry and just enjoy your pregnancy.  Think of all the extra times you will have to see your LO.  :-)

  • DS had this.  Our 20 week ultrasound was already being done by a perintologist since I was over 35 so she checked for kidney and heart abnormalities right then.  We also did an amnio to rule out chromosomal defects.

As others mentioned, you'll get extra ultrasounds and NST toward the end.  I also developed pre-e and was induced at 37 weeks.  They would have let me go longer if I didn't have pre-e.  DS is a perfectly healthy 6 month old.

  • My daughter had this as well.  She went full term and weighed over 9lbs and is perfectly healthy.
