Best vacation destination in the US?

DH's 30th bday is in April and I wanted to surprise him with a trip... we are from New England and lived in FL for 3 years so where would be a fun trip in the spring?
Obviously I don't have a huge budget but where would you recommend?

I like historical places!
Road Trip: I took my DH on a "mystery ride" (he didn't know where we were going) to the Baseball Hall of Fame. We stayed in this cute inn, went to the BBHOF and then we had an awesome dinner in a great restaurant. After that we drove to Niagara Falls (he didn't know about that either) and stayed at Niagara on the Lake (winery tours and the town is just a quaint and adorable town with great food). It was so much fun. He was so excited about the BBHOF and loved that it was a mystery ride, he was guessing the entire drive about where we were going.
Flying: Vegas is always a fun time! I agree about Nappa but I'm not sure how much fun it will be to be DD the entire time. Also you could see the giant redwoods and other sights in N. Cali.
ETA: We had a great time in Savannah too- it was adorable and you only need 3-4 days there. I agree about the Outer Banks but it might be too cold for the beach.
My sisters went there is the fall... I love to go there! Good idea!

LOL gym, DH went to Vegas but I haven't been I stink at gambling and I always lose hence why I am not good at it LOL!
I loved New Orleans! Just check out the city other than Bourbon St. Bourbon St. is very gross.
Like NYC and DC as well. Sanibel Island is really nice too if you are just looking to for a laid back and quiet trip.
We went to NYC in April and it was beautiful. It is supposed to be the cheapest time to go there and sooooo much to do and see and lots of free things to see.
Cherry Blossom Festival in DC, never been but plan to one day!
