hot chocolate "bar" at 1 year b-day?

We're sort of doing the Winter One-derland Theme next weekend for DD's first birthday party and a while back I asked for ideas and a couple people mentioned a hot chocolate "bar".  I would love to do this but what kinds of things did you include and did you really do "hot" chocolate for the little kids?  I was thinking warm chocolate milk or something would be a better idea.  TIA

  • What age are the kids attending? I don't get the hot chocolate bar thing for 1 year olds. Maybe 5 year olds...heck a one year old may not even be on milk yet!

  • sounds delicious!

i've never done it, but marshmallows, cinnamon, choco shavings, sprinkles, candy cane swirl sticks all come to mind.  hot choco is just milk and choco powder, right?  so not sure how choco milk would be much different.

This cracks me up. The only reason they say to hold off until 1 for milk is so it does not replace food.

Anyway, we did one for Julia's 1st birthday party but she did not partake. I got a cool hot chocolate maker from William Sonoma, it makes other stuff too but it was so fun! The kids invited were mostly 2-6.

  • We did one. We had the hot chocolate in the crock pot and had marshmallows, raspberry and caramel sauce, whipped cream and some Baileys for the adults. It was a huge hit!
  • The kids there will be between 2 and 6.  It's not for my dd - she doesn't drink milk yet - so more for the adults and the kids attending.  Thanks for the suggestions.
  • We did it!!!  I wish I had pics but I'm at work and can't get onto FB to access them.

Some of the kids drank it, but mostly adults.  I made it in a crockpot (google Crock Pot Hot Chocolate and you'll find some recipes)...the only things I included with it were mini-marshmellows and candy canes.  No one even used them.  I was going to do whipped cream but we had it at a hall and had no way of keeping it cold.

  • I think this sounds like a really cute idea!  I'd get lots of little and big marshmallows and maybe snag some candy canes if you can find them.  I'd do it for the adults mainly and if someone wants to help their little one with it, they can chose to do that or not!  I wouldn't do anything different or special for the kiddos.
  • mmmm That sounds great! I am going to steal the idea for SIL's baby shower yay!

  • We did this at my DD's Winter Onederland party, it was a huge hit.  The adults drank the hot chocolate, as did the 3-6 year olds that were there.  We had marshmallows, chocolate sprinkles, candy canes, andes mints, whipped cream, caramel sauce, and I dusted the rims of the mugs with cocoa powder.  I happen to have a dishe set with snowflakes on them so it worked perfctly with the theme.  I also made it with milk in the crock pot.
  • I had one at DS's Winter One-derland party in December! The party was mainly adults so it was for them and we had a 5 & 6 year old that loved it too. I made the hot chocolate in the crock pot and had marshmellows and chocolate dipped spoons! Here is a picimage
