to those whose twins were born at 36 weeks...

Were your babies' lungs mature?

Did they spend time in the NICU?  If so, how many days?

My amnio is scheduled for 36w1d and I am really hoping their lungs are mature.  If they are, c-section is scheduled for the following day.  At today's 33 week appt., their estimated weights are 5 lbs 2 oz and 5 lbs 10 oz and they are measuring a week ahead.  I am hoping size won't be what lands them in the NICU.  Just wondering what your experiences were.  :)

Thanks!

  • we went at 36 wks 3 days, baby b spent one day in the nicu because of his lungs, but then had to go back for another 2 days because he was eating too slow, baby a spent one overnight in the nicu and his lungs cleared up on their own in that one night. GL.

  • My boys were born at 36w2d.  Kaden was 4 lbs 6 oz and Nolan was 5 lbs 9 oz.  Neither boy had any breathing problems.  Kaden was in the NICU for 24 hours because he was 25 grams to light to come straight to our room.  He had no problems in the NICU and was able to come into our room the next morning.

  • DDs were born 35w2d, and I had the steroid shots around 27 weeks, so I can't totally relate (no NICU time, not even for my IUGR baby)...

BUT, I've always heard that girls tend to do better than boys when premature, so you've got an advantage with that!

  • My girls were born at 36w5d.  They had no NICU time and were 5 lbs. 7 oz. and 5 lbs. 11 oz.

  • 36 weeks exactly, neither one had to go to NICU, although DD did have a little trouble "transitioning" and breathing when she first came out so they had a neonatal NP & some nurses in there with her & took her to special care (a level below NICU) for about 2-3 hours after she was born but then she adjusted fine & was in the regular nursery with her brother.

They were 5.12 (girl) and 5.6 (boy)

  • My triplets were born at 35 weeks, 6 days.  No steroid shots - their lungs were fine, no breathing assistance.  Em weighed 4 lbs, 13 oz - no NICU.

My DDs were born at 35w6d and I'd had the steroid shots.  One DD was sent automatically to the NICU because she was under 5 lbs (4lb12oz).  She was there 5 days just to make sure she had feeding down (needed a feeding tube just for the first day). The other DD started out in the regular nursery after the c-section, but had some respiratory grunting so they sent her to the NICU too because they were worried about potential infection (she was fine).  She had a couple apnea episodes in the NICU so she stayed for 6 days and was on an apnea monitor for a month after that.  Good luck!

  • Mine were born at 36 weeks, 6 days -- no time in the nursery or NICU, they were with me the whole time and ready to leave when I was! GL!
  • Thanks ladies!  This is all very encouraging.  I might ask my Peri about the steroid shots when I see him next week.

  • Scheduled c-section for hypertension at 36w3d - steroid shot given around 34 weeks.

L was 5lbs. 4oz. and went to NICU for a few hours for observation and was brought up to my room by the time I was out of recovery.

  • My girls were born at 36w3d and did not have any NICU time, they both came right to the room with me. They were 4lbs. 14oz. and 4lbs. 15oz.

Good luck, only a little bit longer to go.

  • My twins were born at 36w 4d. No NICU time. Their lungs were mature. Isaac was 6 lbs. Emily as 5 lbs. 9 oz.

  • My guys were born at 35w4d, no NICU time and I did not have steroid shots.  They were 5lbs.1oz & 4lbs.6oz.  I just had my singleton last week at 34w3d and she stayed in the NICU for only 1 week just to learn to eat which she is great at (lungs were mature).  She was 5lbs even.  The NICU nurses also said that girls are stronger than boys so I'm sure your girls will do great.
