High-Risk Pregnancy

I need to hear some success stories

I am having a lot of problems and my body keeps threatening to miscarry.  My OB today told me that there isn't really anything that they can do and that our goal is to make it to 24 weeks and then hopefully beyond.  I'm hoping that someone here might have had similar issues and have advice to offer, and hopefully have made it past the viability threshold.   My baby is doing perfectly, its just my traitorous body.  I've been bleeding my whole pregnancy so far, along with cramps.  recently the bleeding has slowed down, but monday I had contractions about 7 minutes apart for hours (but no bleeding).  My OB took a quick look at my cervix today and it was closed.  She can't do a full exam because of my placenta previa.  I am currently just on pelvic rest for the placenta previa, but I have put myself on bedrest while at home because otherwise the pain really seems to pick up.  Hoping someone might have some good stories for me!

  • Well, I don't have any similar situation that I can relate too.....but just wanted to let you know you are in my thoughts and prayers.  I hope everything turns out well for you with your pregnancy.

Thank you!  We could us all the thoughts we can get right now!!
  • I'm so sorry you are dealing with all this!

I had a very complicated pregnancy with DS, but I didn't have the same problems you are having. I had bad bleeding between 8-10 weeks, but it eventually stopped. I had a few other complications that threatened my pregnancy (clotting disorder and pre-eclampsia).

Are you seeing a maternal-fetal medicine (high risk) OB? In my experience, the high risk docs are the ones to see. Regular OBs might handle high risk cases, but the MFMs are such great experts because they've seen it all. I ended up spending 2 months on hospital bedrest and was able to carry DS to 37.5 weeks. So I guess that would be my best advice, seeing a MFM specialist if you haven't already done so.

Again, I'm so sorry you are having these issues!! Hang in there...

  • With my first pg, they noticed that my cervix was short and funneling at 23 weeks AND I was having regular contractions. They immediately gave me an emergent cerclage, meds and I was placed on bedrest. Dr.s were not optimistic and gave me the goal of 28 weeks if I was lucky. Well, after many long months of bedrest, meds and multiple hospitalizations, I delivered DS at 38 weeks! Everyone is amazed. It is amazing what your body can do. Just take it easy, follow drs orders, listen to your body and be your own advocate. If you don't feel right, request an appt, ultrasounds, whatever.

This pg, was more of the same. Not as bad or dire as my first, but they wanted me to get to 34 weeks, well, again I showed them! My body does not like being pregnant, but it does do the job with some major interventions.

  • Thank you so much! I do have an appt with an MFM in two weeks. I'm hoping that they have some additional things that we can try such as the progesterone shots, etc. It is so great to hear about people that beat their doctor's predictions.
  • (((hugs))) try to stay positive and not worry.  Worrying about fear of the unknown was  a big regret I had after I delivered. I wish i would have not stressed and enjoy my pregnancy more My body threatened to miscarry at 17 weeks due to two VERY large fibroids that degenerated.  I had mild contractions from then on but my cervix stayed closed and I never went into premature labor like my drs. predicted I would-- saw a maternal fetal specialist every month.  Every appt. they would say, we just want you to make it to __ weeks and I always did.  The dr's discussed worst case scenario with me and that made me worry more than I should have. My LO was born at 39 weeks in c-section--he had a folded ear due to fibroid but he was totally perfect. Hang in there!--as pp said our bodies are capable of amazing things.   Angel

  • I also started to dialate at 23 weeks.  I was on bed rest for 9 weeks and delivered via emergency c-section at 32 weeks.  Hang in there, I know how hard it is.... 24 weeks is a good goal, the NICU docs can work miracles on babies.  Fingers crossed for you and yes, I would also agree with staying off of your feet.  GL.
  • I had bleeding (spotting) due to complete placenta previa almost every day of my pregnancy and I now have a healthy 9 day old little boy.  My previa resolved itself to 'marginal' by 29 wks and was completely gone by 35 wks even though they told me that complete previas don't usually move.  With my first pregnancy, I had PT contractions for weeks as well and never dialated at all.  Hang in there, things can turn out just fine even when they are worrisome along the way.  Sounds like you are being proactive and taking care of yourself.  Good luck and keep thinking positive!
