I have a choice of either location for my delivery. Providence is only about 8 miles from my house and Kaiser Sunnyside is about 22 miles from my house. I haven't scheduled my tours yet - will do them in about 5 weeks, but I have heard that the Kaiser hospital is only a couple of years old and has birthing suites. Anyone deliver at either location - thoughts/preferences???
Re: Providence St. Vincent v. Kaiser Sunnyside for delivery
I delivered at Sunnyside and LOVED it. I had a great experience, A+ in every way. The rooms were huge and nice, all but 1 nurse were very friendly and helpful, and the food was delicious. We had a gorgeous view from the room. I was there for 5 days total. In fact, I always slip up and say "when we were in the hotel having the baby" haha, get it, Hotel, not Hospital. the care that Baby and I recieved was great.
But I live about 5 mins away from Sunnyside, so that was a big factor for me also.
Can you arrange to do tours of both?
As far as I know, St V's doesn't do actual tours, they just have an online virtual tour.. AngelCake could tell you for certain though..
I was going to have my daughter at Providence Portland (closer to home, we live in Washougal, WA). 6 weeks before her due date, my water suddenly broke. I went to Providence Portland to be checked and they confirmed my water broke and that I was dialated to 5 cm and 100% effaced. Because it was so early, they sent me by ambulance to Providence St. V's. The high risk doctor out there was amazing. When everyone else wanted to do a c-section due to some dropping of the babies heartrate during contractions, he was calm and insisted that we wait. I'm so glad he did. A couple of hours after I arrived, I gave birth vaginally. The staff was quick to move, but not hurried. The NICU out there is the amazing and the staff is wonderful. Everything was fine with the baby, but I really did learn a lot from the NICU staff. My room wasn't tiny, but I've heard that there are some that are. I know that a year ago, they were talking about making the rooms larger. If we have another baby, I'll go straight to St. V's because I know they're ready for anything should something unforseen happen.
I do have to agree about the C-section thing. I was told over and over that I was going to have a c-section while I was in the hospital (was induced) but they waited it out knowing I wanted a vag birth and so I had one.
The reason they don't do tours is for security. They don't have the alarm bands for babies to make sure they are not taken out of the ward. I doubt they would let you look around.
I delivered at St. V and had a great experience. The delivery room is nice and spacious, but the room they transfer you to afterward is pretty small.
I delivered at Kaiser Sunnyside and had a great experience! The nurses, doctors and midwives were so nice, the rooms were huge, clean and well-lit and the overall environment was very peaceful. Even though I live in Hillsboro, it was worth the trip out to Clackamas. When I was delivering, there were only a few other women delivering at the same time. I felt completely pampered and had more nursing care than I imagined possible. With the exception of one particular recovery nurse, every single person we dealt with was compassionate, kind, skilled and also had great senses of humor. It meant a lot to me, as I had a pretty stressful and painful delivery and recovery. The nurses made all the difference. The delivery and recovery rooms were so nice and large; it felt like a hotel! I'd definitely return to Sunnyside for my next baby.
Hope that helps!
This. The main nurse I had throughout delivery was so genuinely nice and helpful. DH and I both wrote letters to the hospital about how much we loved her. The rooms after you deliver are either nice and spacious or kind of cramped. They have 2 sizes and it's random which one you get (at least that's what they told me). My SIL had a much bigger room than I did but we were still taken care of nicely.
Hello! I'm new to this board.
I had the same question about St. Vincents and Kaiser Sunnyside...then I found this post, so I have an additional question about these two hospitals.
Does anyone know if they offer water births or other types of natural birthing methods? If they do, how did they work for you?
I'm planning on asking this during the tours and birthing classes, but those don't start till March for me.
