Short Term Disabilty Insurance

Anyone get this?  A few people told me about it before I got pregnant and like an idiot I never got it.  My job doesn't pay for maternity leave but this would have given me money while I was out.  BUT I believe you can't get it if you're already preggers right?  Anyone have any information??

  • I get this.  With my company I am eligiable to 60% of my regular salary for 6 weeks after birth if delivered vaginally and 8 weeks if delivered by c-section.  Every policy is different, but with ours you're eligiable for STD from day one of employment.

  • I have it.  The thing is I get 7 wks paid leave at 100% anyway due to my tenure, so the STD really won't even come into play unless I have a c/s. I've been paying for it all this time & I won't even benefit from it with regard to the pregnancy.  Oh well.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • I don't think you can get it while you are pregnant.  I had it with my previous job and had a c/s but they were a pain and only paid me for 6 weeks because I didn't have any complications!  That really made me mad considering I had what people call a major surgery and because I healed OK I wasn't eligible.
  • I have AFLAC STD and am so glad I do!  I'm self employed so I obviously wouldn't get paid anything while on maternity leave without it.  It's 6 weeks for vaginal, 8 for c-section.  And no, unfortunately you can't get it when already pregnant.  I know with mine you couldn't have a baby within the first 10 months, 1 day.

  • I have it through work now, but previously when I had private insurance I talked to my insurance agent about it and he said for the company they went through you have to wait a year before you could get pregnant.  I think if you get it through your work you can only get it during open enrollment and I think most places do that in October or November.

  • I bought Colonial short term disability 2 years ago.  They make you have the coverage for at least 12 months for pregnancy.  Even then, they will only pay 6 weeks for a natural birth and 8 weeks for a C section.  My employer does not offer anything beyond whatever vacation time I save up so I thought this would be a good option.
  • I heard that women can't ge it while pregnant but husbands can.
