ultrasound result..is this cause for concern?

Hi all,

We just had an 18 week ultrasound and on the report, there was a number of things listed such as head, stomach and abdomen, heart charmbers etc... all were checked off except stomach and there was a note that read "small stomach seen (empty?)"

My OB said that what occasionally happens is that the baby, which drinks (I think) the amniotic fluid and then pees it out and so then baby's stomach was possibly empty during this u.s.  He wants to have me do another one in 3 weeks just to be sure.  He said I shouldn't be concerned, but of course, I am!

Anyone had a similar experience to this?  The baby is growing so I'm assuming it's getting the proper nutrients etc., but I am just curious about if others have had this?

Thanks

  • I had the exact same thing with my first except the Dr.'s office said they couldn't see if the baby had a stomach.  I was of course hysterical, and when we went for the follow up everything was perfect!  The US tech at the follow up said that babies are just like us, and sometimes their stomach is full and sometimes it's empty.  They just happened to catch it when it was empty, and couldnt' see.  Please don't lose sleep over this like I did.  We have a perfect 3 year old today :)

  • I didn't have the issue with the stomach but I did with the arms, legs, kidneys and head.  Baby JT was breech at 19w4d so it was pretty tough for the tech to get the measurements/pictures.  I just went back at 24w and he was head down and stretched out and so she got everything she needed.

I wouldn't worry at all just yet.. I'm sure the baby had just emptied its stomach or something =)

  • Thanks ladies,

Even just those 2 responses have put my mind at ease a bit! You know, because when you ask the dr., they want to tread lightly and not say something that can then come back to them later if their wrong..I know that he's having me have another one to ere on the side of caution.  I too am pretty sure this is the case! Hopefully it is! Thanks!

  • Does everyone get a checklist with their u/s?  Iam 18 weeks and I go on Mon for 1st u/s.  I'll pray for you and baby.

  • Hi

Thanks so much! This wasn't so much a checklist as the standard report they print out that I then brought to the ob...everythng else they looked at was checked off, and this was the only one that had a note, so as the other ladies said above, hopefully this is normal! It's definitely growing!
