2nd Trimester

I haven't put on much weight and it's worrying me.....

I started with a slender build, and have a noticeable bump now, although it's still small which seems normal at this stage

however, I haven't put on much weight

about 5 pounds so far in total

at every scan the baby was measuring ahead, and I'm eating often and healthy - so I don't see any problem there, but I'm just worried anyone

anyone else not gain a lot by 16 weeks? do you think maybe I'll just put on weight later in the trimester? I seem my OB again in 3 1/2 weeks after the 19 week scan for reassurance, but you know, I still worry...........

Re: I haven't put on much weight and it's worrying me.....

  • I had gained 4 pounds at 16 weeks which I was told by my doc was totally normal. Now at 22 weeks, I am up 12 pounds. As long as your doc is not concerned and your baby is growing fine, you should not be worried.

  • I lost 15 lbs between my BFP and my first appt at 8 weeks. By week 16, I think I had gained a pound or two. If your doctor isn't worried, there's no need for you to be (easier said than done, I know!)
  • Did your doctor tell you that they are worried? If not then don't worry!

I didn't put on any weight until 24 weeks and had lost a few pounds in 1st tri now I am only up 14 pounds and very happy. My body is gaining what it needs to since I am eating healthy. Just enjoy!

  • From what I've read in previous posts there are a lot of people who haven't gained anything or have gained just a few pounds into the second tri.

I'm up 6lb already so clearly not a problem for me.

I think there is so much variation among people that there really isn't a 'normal' chart for weight gain. As long as you are eating often and healthy food you will be fine.

  • Yea my OB was ok with my weight gain at both appt's so far, I guess it's just that there is such a big wait til the next one (6 rather than 4 weeks cause of the scan & cause he's on holiday)

thanks ladies - that's the reassurance that I needed to hear - I really appreciate it

  • I haven't gained anything, so I know how you are feeling!

My dr. said that its normal and the baby is so small right now that as long as you are eating right and not denying your self when you are hungry you should be fine.

     Good luck!

  • You're not supposed to gain more than 30 lbs anyway, so don't worry.  You'll catch up.

I've been holding steady at 7lbs for weeks.

  • I'm 17 weeks and lost 4 lbs at my last appt...I stopped losing weight but haven't gained anything either. I started out a healthy weight and dr said as long as i am eating healthy and taking prenatals, i just need to start gaining my 20 weeks. so I'm sure you're doing fine, especially if your baby is growing great...it just means you'll bounce back really quick postpartum!

oh that's great to hear!! yes I guess I really should just call the OB and ask, but I'm trying not to be a worry wart, I am eating really well, so all must be well in there I guess - fingers crossed:)
  • I am 20 weeks and have gained maybe 6  pounds but I lost 12 in the first tri being so sick......my doc was concerned at first with how much I was losing, but now doesnt seem concerned even though I should be up 10-13 pounds I think she said........I wouldnt worry

  • I am down 2 pounds at 16 weeks, i posted about this earlier and my doc put me on a protien diet
  • As long as your dr isn't concerned, you don't need to worry.

I hadn't gained any weight as of my 17 week appt.  Not sure if'I've gained any since then (no scale at home).  I also have a bump & can't even zip my regular pants.

  • I stayed the same weight until week 15, and at my 16 week appt had gained only 3 lbs. My doctor thought that was good. Since then I've gone up a few more, but I mostly go off the drs scale, so we'll see on the 28th.

  • youre very much within normal range - dont stress yourself out ... Its still early.
  • 5 pounds at 16 weeks sounds totally normal.    "What to your expect when you're Expecting" said a healthy weight gain was 3-4 pounds in the first trimester, so it sounds like you are right on.

Believe me, later in the 2nd and 3rd trimester, you'll wonder where the extra pounds are coming from.   It's normal for weight gain to be slow at first.

I totally envy your weight gain by the way!   I'm behind you at 13 weeks, but I've lost a lot and its pretty depressing.

  • With both pregnancies, I have gained nothing early on. In fact, I've lost weight this time. But last pregnancy, I did gain more rapidly later on and my net gain was 35ish pounds. And my son was 8lb 12 oz. I wouldn't worry!

  • I am tall and slender built too. I gained nothing at my 17w appt, then at my 21w appt I had finally gained 4 lbs. My next appt is tomorrow so I am hoping for another 4 lbs!

    GL!

  • I'm only at 14 weeks but also very slender and have only but on 3 lbs. so that's somewhat relevant to you. My dr. said it was fine and the baby was healthy and sounds like you are getting the same report, so I wouldn't worry!

    Perhaps this chart will help.

oh that is AWESOME thanks - I'm right on the low end of that scale - but still on it - hooray! makes me feel so much better:)
  • Don't worry at all. I had not gained anything at 16 weeks. Trust me, it will come:)

  • I'm slender as well and didn't gain my first pound until 19 weeks. Even at (almost) 27 weeks, I've only gained 9-10 pounds.

My doctor says I'm measuring right on track.
    You'll be fine.

  • I actually lost almost 13 lbs in my first trimester.  I've gained back 3-4 of that.  So I'm still down 10 lbs or so overall.  My doctor wasn't concerned.  She was just happy to see I didn't lose more at my last appointment.

  • I started off "underweight" on the weight charts (5'4" and 107lbs) and lost a few pounds due to m/s in the first tri.  My OB was on me to gain weight.  At 16 weeks I had finally gained the weight back and was up about 2 pounds.  At my 19 weeks appt, I had gained another 8 pounds!  That was 8 pounds in 3 weeks!  My OB was VERY happy to see that I was gaining weight.  A number of things helped: going on modified bed rest, meds for acid reflux, holidays, and eating an icecream cone or milkshake EVERY day!  I think you are doing well to have gained 5 pounds at 16 weeks and wouldn't worry too much...the weight will come!
  • If your doctor isnt concerned, then you shouldnt be. Your LO is growing fine and that's what is important.

At 16 weeks, I was still down 10 pounds.

    You'll put it on!

  • You're fine. I was only up 4 lbs by my 22 week appointment (I lost about 10 lbs in 1st tri from nausea) and my doctor said she doesn;t get concerned about weight gain unless the baby isn't measuring well. I'm measuring just perfectly, baby is growing, and weight gain is picking up (around 20 weeks the baaby start putting on fat so that when you'll start to see the scale move). I would bring it up at your next docs appointment but until then know that everyone handles pregnancy a bit differently and it's nothing to worry about at this point for you.
  • I have lost about 5 lbs since pregnant. I was worried about it but the doctor was not. He said that the baby is such a good parasite that it should not matter and that the weight will come on eventually.

I'm halfway through week 17 and still WAY in the negatives (like more than 10 pounds in the negatives when I started off at borderline underweight to begin with).  My baby is measuring fine.  I'm still having bouts of nausea/occasional vomiting but able to eat now.  I've been able to gain a few pounds so at least I'm not losing anymore.  If your doctor isn't concerned then you shouldn't be concerned.  Your baby will take what it needs from you.
