2nd Trimester

Anyone else with an Anterior Placenta?

I just found this out from the MD at my 24 wk check-up...apparently this is why I wasn't feeling movement until last week!

I have read a bit about it on the internet, but am still unclear on a few things....

1.  What is the likelyhood that it will move?

2.  What are the chances of me having to have a C-birth?

3.  What else do I need to know?

 TIA

Re: Anyone else with an Anterior Placenta?

  • My ultrasound tech yesterday mentioned that I had an anterior placenta, but I forgot to ask the Doc about it when we met with her! But from what I know, it should not determine the type of birth you have (C sec). Its just positioned in the front of your abdomen instead of the back towards your spine. It may "move" some, but it honestly doesnt really need to, as there is no concern on its location unless it was over your cervix. It may slightly change position within your uterus as you grow. All I really know is that those with an AP tend to not feel LO kick and move as early as other ladies do. I have felt movement already though!?

  • Yes.

    1) It just depends on exactly where it is and if it moves as your uterus gets bigger.  There is no way to predict.

    2) The only thing your anterior placenta would really have to do with a c-section is if the baby is breech they can't try and turn it.

    3) It's not a big deal.

While I dont know exactly where mine is positioned, I feel like its more on the right side anterior b/c that may explain why I feel all the movement on left!?!

  • My dr left me a message after my 20 week u/s that I had anterior placenta which is interesting b/c I feel the little guy all the time.  I have my next appointment next Tuesday so I'll be asking all of those questions.  My dr did say that they will be doing another u/s around 30-32 weeks to make sure it has moved.
  • I have an anteior placenta.  I have been feeling little movements, but not much.  I think they usually move and I don't think there are any complications from it.  The only complication would be if the placenta was covering the cervix, so no worries!
  • Thanks for the knowledge.  I will ask about another US b/c I did read that a C-birth is possible with placenta covering cervix...
  • I have one.  Dr said nothing to be concerned about.  No complications at birth, nothing needs to be  monitored, etc.

Yes, placenta covering your cervix is called placenta previa and that would equal a C-section.

  • An anterior placenta is not the same thing as a placenta covering the cervix.  That is called a placenta previa.  An anterior placenta means that the placenta is on the front wall of your uterus (closer to your belly button) as opposed to the back wall.

This fetal development picture on baby center (of a perfectly normal pregnancy BTW) pictures an anterior placenta.
