3rd Trimester

Measuring small

When I went to the doc yesterday, she said I was measuring behind (about 31 1/2 weeks). When we had a growth u/s at 32 weeks, the baby was in the 35th percentile, which they said was fine. The doc yesterday said she's not worried that I'm measuring small, she thinks I'm just carrying well. But, I still have to wonder if this is normal. I've never been told I was measuring behind before. Has anyone else had this, and does it ever change later?

Re: Measuring small

  • I am measuring behind too.  I have a very long torso and that is why my OB said that I am measuring behind.  He was not worried at all.

  • I've been measuring behind since 32 weeks, but baby is fine. I am very petite, so they are not surprised I'm carrying a small baby. I've had 2 growth ultrasounds. 1st at 34 weeks had baby in the 12th% and 2nd at 37weeks had baby in the 26th%. At my 37 week appt. I was measuring 34 weeks.

Try not to worry unless your doctor does. I know that's hard though :)

  • Monday I was 37 1/2 weeks, measuring 33. you will probably continue to measure small... I have with both pregnancies. I just have smaller babies... (not incredibly small though) Just watch LO after birth, while in the hospital DS wouldnt eat and lost 11 oz in just under 2 days. They said many babies who "measure beind" have trouble getting used to eating, only lasted about a week.

  • I"m measuring behind a little too - around the 35th%.  The doctor said it's still in the normal range.  I read online they don't get worried unless you are less than 10%.
  • With #1 the baby "measured small" from 7 weeks on...but in reality she was just a tall, thin kid. She was born at 6.5lbs but was nearly 21" long!! To this day she's 40% for weight and 90% for height. Don't worry babies come in all shapes and sizes :)
  • I had been measuring small for a while, but then my LO had a growth spurt or something and I'm only about a week behind.
  • My LO is measuring small too, and his size totally didn't correspond with the fundus measurement.  I had a regular check up and I was measuring right on track (the previous appt I was measuring big), and 5 days later I had an ultrasound (to check his heart) and found out he was measuring very small..in the 5th percentile.  If I hadn't happened to have this extra ultrasound, they never would have known how small he actually is.  I'd def go by the ultrasound measurements rather than the belly measurement!

  • I'm short and petite and with my first I never measured over 30 cm- I was always "behind".  It was never a concern because for one the measurements really mean nothing- the baby could be sitting a different way, etc. and also we assumed I'd have a small baby due to the size I was when I was born.  DS came full term and was small but very healthy- under 6 lbs.  He's now 14 months old and is very healthy and you wouldn't know he was a "small" baby.  I'm measuring the same with this one so I'm not concerned either.

I never thought of the long torso. I'm pretty tall, so that makes sense.

Thanks for all the words of reassurance, ladies!

  • I had been measuring small from about 32 to 38 weeks... LO's stomach was the only part about 4 weeks behind. Everything else was only a week behind. Well I was scheduled to be induced tomorrow because she was in the 10th percentile and they did one more ultrasound yesterday and she measured in the 66th percentile, so in a week and a half she had gained a lot of weight and now I don't have to be induced!!!

  • I measured small with DS1 (2 weeks behind from about 24 weeks on) and now I'm measuring 4 weeks behind with this little guy and have been since about 20 weeks.

I have a long torso though and even though my belly measured small with DS1, he came out at 7.12 and 20.5" and was on target for his due date with all of my u/s.
