3hr Glucose Test - 300+Carbs Seriously?

Morning girls - I don't normally post over here but someone on the 3rd Tri board thought maybe someone would be able to offer a little more insight on my post over there. Thanks in advance for any advice you might offer.

So last week I had my 1hr glucose test and my doctor said I didn't fail but I was right on the cut off (140) so they were sending me for the 3hr test just to be sure... lucky me right???

I'm going on Friday morning so the next three days she said I'd need to do a high carb diet which includes eating my regular diet PLUS 300g of carbs??? Does that sound right? I've googled different procedures for this test and everything I found says to eat at least 150g of carbs per day however nothing about 300 EXTRA grams?!?! I have the sheet right in front of me and I don't know that I can physically eat that much more food?! I have a hard enough time getting my regular diet down without feeling like I'm going to burst!

Anyway, just wondering your experiences with this lovely test... :)

Re: 3hr Glucose Test - 300+Carbs Seriously?

  • Yes I too got a 139 on on the one hour and they made me do the 3 hour which I failed for 'real'.

I had to eat a special carb heavy diet with bread, potato, milk, and a fruit or dessert at every meal the three days prior. The doctor said this was because if you don't eat enough carbs it can also make the test falsely high b/c your liver spurts out too much sugar to compensate.

I'm not going to lie it's fairly miserable test. THey don't let you eat or drink until your full 3 hours are up and you have to drink more of the glucose drink. It made me feel like I was going to puke or pass out and my heart was beating rapidly. I felt off the rest of the day.

GL i hope you pass, but if you don't I have gotten wonderful help and tips from this board.

  • Thanks! I just kept getting responses that people were thinking this was ridiculous because 300 g of carbs is an insane amount of carbs to eat ON TOP of what you normally eat - I know that I won't even come close to 300 extra but I'm trying to add where I can.

I just didn't want to overload on carbs and then fail because that's not even how I normally eat?! Anyway, thanks so much for your reply!

  • I have read that some doctors suggest carbo loading prior to the 3-hour test so your body is primed for it.  I failed the 1 hour with a high enough number that I didn't have to do the 3 hour, just skipped right to GD counseling/diet.  So I have no idea, but if you're really unsure, why not call your doc and double check his instructions?
  • Just did this last week, followed the 300 grams of carbs a day and passed.  I didn't add "extra" carbs, I ate 300 grams of carbs....it is really hard, if you are a mostly healthy eater to get the carbs in, but it is doable.

Have bread, potatoes, veggies, fruit....adding the dessert at lunch and dinner made it a little fun.  Now I am having the fun of going back to my regular eating...dessert is more fun.

The test isn't fun, the drink is very, very sweet, but you can do it.

I took along my laptop (hospital has wireless), cell phone (and charger) and was able to get some work done and the time went faster.  Others have suggested brining a portable dvd player and watching a movie to help pass the time.

    Good luck

  • I had to do the 3 day carb heavy diet with DS after failing the one hour and I ended up gaining 3lbs from it. It was SO much food (I was given a menu to select from and had to eat all of those items each meal/snack) and I could barely stomach it by the end.
