bleeding embilical cord

DS's embilical cord stump has been bleeding this morning.  Not like dripping blood or anything, but his clothes that touch it will get blood on it.  Is it normal for this to happen before it falls off or should I call the Dr?  Otherwise it looks fine, doesn't look dirty or infected or anything and doesn't seem painful to him.

Re: bleeding embilical cord

  • Aidan's bled a bit, then came off a couple days later. Then it bled some more. Then it healed. I called pedi but he said as long as it didn't bleed a lot or seem painful or infected to let it go, just keep it dry and clean.

If you're really worried call the pedi though!

  • This happend to our LO, like there would be a little spot of blood or crust on his t-shirt from the cord stump... Then it got a little gooey and then it would get dry and then gooey again, then it was haning on by a thread and then finally fell off and his belly button still seemed gooey and a little raw, but it all worked out.

Have you smelled it? I think if it smells, that could be a sign of infection.

When is your next pedi appt?

  • that's normal,  when feeding or changing you may bump it and not even know it--it will bleed/seep.  Its like a scab-pick it and it bleeds creating a new layer of protection--until healed up.
  • We see the pedi on Friday and I'm not overly concerned about it being something serious.  Doesn't smell at all so I think we'll be ok till then.  Thanks for the input.
  • Same as the pp's - as long as it doesn't smell, isn't bleeding consistently and doesn't have green discharge it's likely just the healing process (according to our ped).

My DS' stump humg by a thread for part of a day then did a minimal amount of bleeding/looking raw and leaving traces of blood on his onesies for about a week before it really started looking like it was healing well.
