clomid monitoring question - no flames please :)

I'm taking clomid and not being monitored - well I am all of a sudden (not sure why now and not before) very paranoid about multiples (higher than twins)  I am on day 14 and should be ovulating any day (based on last months cycle)   Soooo my question is - Can I call in tomorrow to have an U/S done to see how many eggs there are before they do an IUI probably later this week - or is it to late for this cycle?  No flames please..

TIA!!

Re: clomid monitoring question - no flames please :)

  • Well, if you are on Clomd and CD 14 you are may have already ovulated or are probably very close to ovulating. My first cycle on Clomid I had ovulated by my first monitoring appointment, which was on CD 10.

If I were you, I'd call in to see (the Clomid may not have even worked for you...or you may have tons and tons of mature follies) but I would NOT have sex anytime soon..at least until you know.

They wouldn't really do an IUI on you without an u/s though, would they? Indifferent

  • I'm afraid yes that is the plan.... I've been using OPKs twice a day so I don't think I have ovulated.. so if I haven't can they still do an u/s?

  • Oh man..that is really, really scary. I've honestly never heard of such a thing. Often times GYNs will prescribe Clomid like it is candy and then tell people to do TI when they get a positive OPK but I've never heard of an IUI w/out monitoring. Is this an RE?

Yes, they can still do an u/s. Call in the morning.

And seriously, don't do any TI or anything with your husband until you know. You could end up in a real mess.

I would be REALLY concerned that your Dr did not automatically set you up for monitoring ultrasounds prior to an IUI. I would say, yes you absolutely should get an ultrasound, and I would strongly consider getting a second opinion about your treatment

  • I know that I am outside of the norm, but my 4th cycle on clomid, I had 11 mature follies, and obviously my cycle was cancelled, and we were told to abstain.  My 5th cycle on clomid, I had 7 mature follies, and again we were told to abstain.  The thought of you taking clomid and not being monitored scares me.  I can't believe that they would do an IUI without proper monitoring.

  • What is the number of follies that generally equals a cancelled cycle? Which I would be fine with if there is a risk for high order multiples... just curious what the number normally is.

Most REs will cancel with more than 2 mature follies. SOME will consider 3-4 mature follies ok if there is serious MFI but that is really, really pushing it. I'm not sure what your diagnosis is.

I mean, essentially one follie could = one baby, two follies = two babies, ect. Of course anything can happen...it isn't a perfect science.

  • DH has low morph - 2% and 4% -

I will def call tomorrow morning and beg for them to get me in for an u/s asap - hopefully I don't ovulate before then.  Even if I had my LH surge in the morning they could still do an u/s tomorrow before iui the next day.  Nothing like figuring shxx out last minute!!

  • and of course thank you!

  • The one thing you have to remember is that Clomid stimulates follicle production, but that multiples on clomid are rare, at only 4%.  So I wouldn't be as worried about it as I would about the fact that if your lining isn't thick enough, you won't be able to sustain a pregnancy anyways, and you'd be paying for an IUI that the ultimate outcome wouldn't be good.
