but, how do you even start picking out names? I have no ideas. I don't have a family name to pass down, I don't have any names that i've loved since I was 12----my kid's gonna be called "hey you" b/c I just don't know how or where to start.
DH bought me a 100, 001 name book and to be honest that is quite intimedating too, there are so many names in there. I have just flipped the book open and then closed it until I am further along to be picking names. Good luck Allison, you have 7ish months to figure it out!

I agree with MrsG. Just start scrolling through baby name websites... or maybe even thebump's name section because it isnt as overwhelming as some of the larger sites.
I started a list of ideas (like a draft in my email so I could always access it) Throw down any and every name that sounds remotely "your style" and that way you and DH can eventually go over these ideas together. It is so easy to forget names that you have read or heard that you like if you dont keep track.
Another great thing is if you work somewhere that you read names a lot... start paying attention. I work in a Drs office/Spa so I looked at patient and client names all the time to get ideas.
Maybe there's a word that means something special to you...like faith, hope, honesty, loyalty. There are websites that will let you look up a meaning and give you names that mean that. Or is there an origin you are more biased towards, like Irish, German, African, Latin. Typing in an origin first can help you narrow down the field a little. Just start making you a list and run it with your last name and see if it flows. Keep the ones you like and have DH help you once you get the ones you like!

We named DD1 after a character on one of our favorite TV shows.
When looking for names for this baby, we consulted name books, websites, and family. Eleanor was actually a suggestion from my mom, and I chose Rose as a middle name because it's my sneaky Twilight reference. Yes, I am that big of a nerd. *Don't tell MH!* haha

I agree with MrsG. Check out the websites. Babynames.com and Nymbler are great. We started with a letter. We wanted the first name to start with a "J" like mine. So then we just looked at girl names that started with a J. Some people start with their ethnicity ... like only considering Irish names. GL!

This is my fav baby names website - it's really interesting just for cruising around. I went to the "decades" part and looked over names from 70 years ago.
Plus, if you pick the "Jennifer" of the 2010's, at least you'll know. That way you won't be shocked when there are 9 Madison Ava's in your daughter's kindergarten class.
Looking at the top baby names for 1978 was like looking at my kindergarten class roster.

Ooooooooooh that's neat!
Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I know it's way early to worry about this, but hey, I'm unemployed, I have to do something while being turned down for jobs. haha.
I recently found www.nameberry.com and I love it! It has cool lists (I don't like looking at pages and pages of names in alpha order - it just stresses me out!)

I second Nymbler and the SSA page. Both are really fun to play with.
I've always been a fan of this book and its many versions over the years - it makes me think about names in a different, more practical way.
