So I have the GD, and I go for my appt tomorrow. I know they're going to go over diet and whatnot and set up a plan for me, do they also provide me with the glucose testing supplies (or at least a prescription) and show me how to use it? what questions should I be sure to ask, and what things should I make sure they go over with me? I just want to be sure and make the most of this appt.
Re: Nutritionist Appt Tomorrow - Advice Please
During my appointment they did provide me with my testing meter and a small amount of testing strips that was covered by my insurance plan. Then at my next doctor appointment I was written a prescription to get more testing strips and lancets. They also showed me how to use it during my appointment.
They should give you a meal plan and go over it with you. I would just make sure you understand the plan and ask any questions about it.
They should go over glucose testing and give you a monitor or at least a script for the supplies.
You may just want to clarify the amounts of carbs they want you to eat, how they want you to track them, when to test and also how they want you to keep in touch with them (I have to fax my numbers in once a week and then they call me).
My experience is that the educator was VERY clear and I really didn't have many questions.

This exactly. They will tell you how may grams of carbs they want you to eat at every meal (3 per day) and snack (3 per day). Keep in mind that it is a jumping off point. They can't magically look at you and know exactly what will work. Your OB will want to keep tabs on your numbers and find out how the diet works for you. I was started at 60g per meal and 30g per snack, and we ended up cutting that in half after only 2 days. It was clear from my numbers that the original carb allowance was too high for my body. Now I am on 30g per meal, 15g per snack, and I do insulin injections at night for my fasting numbers.
well I should have just given you all my $30 co-pay because that was a worthless appt. My dr apparently doesn't use the "counting carbs" method and gave me some goofy sheet with meal examples that don't make sense at all. She should have just faxed me the script for the testing supplies and save us both the time.
You ladies have been way more helpful in food plan suggestions so I'm sticking with the plan I had before my meeting and, so far, my numbers have been within target range. Thanks!
