I packed mine last night and kept it simple...we only live about 15 mins from the house and DH is going to have to run home to walk the dog a few times a day so anything I decide I need I figured I could have him pick up. I packed 2 nightgowns, a bunch of underwear, lots of socks (some light, some heavier ones), toothbrush/toothpaste, lotion, flip flops, chapstick, deoderant and a body spray, contact lens solution and case and a couple headbands/hair clips. For LO I packed 4 (prolly too many) little outfits for the hospital, her coming home outfit, and we are bringing her diaper bag for the ride home with a few diapers, a couple receiving blankets, and a nb paci.
I am having a c-section so I will be there a few days so I am bringing a pillow, books, Boppy, yoga pants, I have nice list can't remember what is on it...
FYI, my hospital told me explicitly to NOT bring stuff like lifesavers, because of a choking hazard (understandable, since you'll be in a lying position at some points, also having contractions). I'd bring sour lollipops. I was also highly encouraged to bring ice popsicles, since they're better than ice chips in terms of making you feel like you're eating something.
I was told if I had a breast pump, to bring it - so the LC can help with your own pump adjustments.
Food for your DH, and snacks for yourself for after giving birth - if the food court is closed at 2am, it's better than waiting an hour+ for someone to find you a cold hospital sandwich, and I'm not one for vending machine food.
Baby book, if you plan on putting hand and footprints in it.
Cell phone/camcorder and chargers.
Your own toiletries, and a nail file for LO.
A robe and slippers.
Change of clothing for yourself and DH and LO.
Insurance card and photo ID for yourself, that your DH holds onto to help with the checking in process while you get changed into the hospital gown. Also, a copy of the pre-admittance forms since there's a 50/50 shot that the hospital will lose the ones you sent in.
Re: Packing the hospital bag
take the bare minimum.
bring life savers to suck on during labor and small bills for the vending machine for hubby.
flip flops for the shower and something for you and LO to wear home
really that is all you need.
I used The Bump's list when I went in to have DS1 and it's how I packed this bag too. Here's the link: (sorry, I don't know how to make it clicky)

you MUST bring your own pillow!!!
But that's just my opinion...LOL
