Babies: 0 - 3 Months

BF'ed babies- bottle brand question.

I am having a heck of a time with giving Gianna a bottle. ?She was taking Avent and then decided over x-mas break that she no longer likes it. Great. ?

I then bought Nuk bottles which is the same brand as her paci, which she loves. ?She will take it but the nipple sizes that Nuk has are either way too slow or way too fast. ?(0+ or 6+ no 3mth) We poked holes in the slow nipple but its still not working well and she gets very moody/sleepy when taking the bottle. ?It takes her a half hour to just eat one ounce and she screams through most of it. ?These are not working for us either.

I would love to go out without her and without having to worry that she is giving her "feeder" difficulty. That is not happening right now. ??We are at our wits end and would love some advice on what bottles/nipple sizes you use.?

  • We use Dr Brown bottles with the standard nipples right now.  She takes that during the day and has no problem switching back to my nipple in the evening and early morning.  Hope it gets better soon! GL!

  • We use the Medela bottles/nipples that came with our Pump In Style. So far he seems to like them

This.  I BF then supplement with 1.5 oz formula after each feeding.  He has no problem going from one to another.

  • I am by no means an expert, because we are still dealing with this very issue. My LO takes the playtex drop-in with the latex orthodontic nipple (It only comes in a medium flow.)  We have tried Dr. Brown's, Nuk, regular playtex, Born Free, Ventaire...name it.

We also make sure we warm up the milk very well and then warm the nipple.

  • We are using Playtex drop ins with silicone natural latch nipples. LO does just fine going back and forth between breast and bottle.

We too noticed that the bottle has to be warm. ?

  • My daughter does not seem to be too picky she nurses most of the time and will take either a Medela bottle (came with the pump) or a Playtex Ventaire Advanced wide bottle without any problems.  When she starts taking more than 5 oz. from a bottle I think we'll try the Born Free ones since they appear to get really good reviews.

I'm still struggling too.  We actually just switched TO the avent (again).  What has worked for us (intermittently) so far are the Playtex Ventair Advanced with slow flow nipples and the bottles that came with my Evenflow Pump.  I worry all day at work about him fighting the bottle.  But, sometimes he fights what few feedings I can give him at the breast as well.

  • I've been using the Medeal bottles that came with out Swing pump. It takes him a bit to remember how since he gets bottles only occasionally.
  • We do a bunch - Playtex ventaire, Medela, Dr. Browns, Born Free and Avent.  I would say the Playtex, Born Free and Avent have the widest nipples, most like the breast (from my collection - I know there are other brands even more similar).  The Dr. Browns and Medela seem to have thinner nipples.  She takes them all fine but if your baby is having trouble with the switch I would keep closer to a shape more similar to breast/nipple.

  • I'm in a similar situation - DD won't take any bottles, never has, and I'm going back to work (and she's starting daycare) on Tuesday!

We've tried Playtex drop ins (Natural Latch nipples?), Nuby and Mam. The other nipples I saw seemend to look just like the Playtex ones. She has come the closest with the Mam nipple.

But I think for DD, it's not that she doesn't like the nipples, she doesn't know what to do with them, doesn't know to suck on them. We're trying everyday to hopefully teach her how to suck on a bottle nipple. But I'm so stressed over this!

    Good luck!

  • We use Dr. Brown's w/ level one standard nipples (0-3 months) and those still seem to have a good flow for him. He took down 3 ounces like he was shotgunning a beer this morning. HA! But when he starts to get fussy with them I will move to level two which is 3 months plus.
