Low Iron...which supplement to take?

Anyone have any suggestions for prenatals or supplements i can take in general, that are good for low iron? i am looking for something over the counter since i went to the DR yesterday and forgot to mention that at my WIC appointment, they tested my iron and said it was a little low.TIA

Re: Low Iron...which supplement to take?

  • I'm taking SlowFE twice a day.  As long as I eat lots of fruit and veggies, an occasional bowl of raisin bran, and drink my water, I don't get too backed up from it.

I'd call the doc, though, and find out what they want you to take.  They may need to know how low is "low" before they recommend one.

  • My doctor put me on integra but it's pretty pricey. Around $60 for a 90 day supply.
  • I take Slow Fe once a day. But you need to mention this to your doctor. Depending on your blood count you may need to take the supplement once or twice a day. This is important b/c you don't want to over or under take iron pills.

  • Do you think a prenatal is enough ? They said it was only a little bit low...so not sure the exact number...and I havent taken my prenatal lately because I ran out and havent gotten more...I know, I know, shame on me...
  • I take 1 Ferro Sequal once a day
  • Okay...I was trying to avoid going back in when I just went yesterday...but I guess thats what I get for forgetting to mention it.....bllahh.....I'll see what they say.
  • Not necessarily. The best thing to do is start taking your prenatal vitamins and talk to your doctor so s/he can test for your count.

  • My iron count was low too and my midwife recommended Slow Fe once a day. But check with your doctor to see if that's the right dosage. You might be able to find another PNV with a higher iron content that will do the trick.

  • Floradix worked wonders for me and I love that it's all fruits and veggies. Comes in tabs and liquid.

  • Some studies have shown that calcium interferes with iron absorption. So, the iron in your PNV may not make it into your bloodstream becasue of the calcium in the PNV. And if you have a big glass of milk with every meal (for example) the iron in the foods you eat at that meal may not be absorbed.

My doc recommends slowFe. And to take it with water, not with my PNV, and not with any calcium rich foods in my stomach.

I took SlowFe when my doc told me I had low iron counts.  I suggest taking it on a full stomach. Despite it being a slow release it still managed to make me feel queasy after taking it with too little food.
