Anyone else's LO bang their head into something

Sometimes Nicholas will sit on the floor and just bang the back of his head into the wall.  Sometimes he does it in his crib.   He does it randomly, so it's not a tired thing.

I wonder why he does this.  Anyone else?

  • My DD will do that in her high chair.  She slams herself/head backwards so hard that it makes the chair move across the floor.  It doesn't seem like she's doing anything that would hurt her.  It's weird and I wish she wouldn't do it, but I have gotten used to it and think she just does it out of boredom and to hear the bang.  She also loves to bang things together, slam her hands down, etc.  I figure it's part of that phase.

  • Nico does this every now and then on the floor.  It seems that he is testing the hardness of the floor in various places.  He will do it on the wood floor, the rug, ect.  He doesn't bang very hard, but it still bothers me and I tell him "No"

  • My mom has a daycare kid who is a really bad headbanger.  He will bang for 45 minutes in bed, fall asleep sitting up and when he falls over asleep it wakes him up and he starts over.  He will bang a little in the high chair or in other places but sleeping is when it's worst for him.  He actually stripped the screws on his crib and it fell apart one night while he was banging.  This is a VERY extreme case and hard to compare to what you guys are dealing with, but in my mom's research (online of course) if it's done at bedtime, it's a soothing device and will most likely be outgrown.

  • I googled it because I was worried about Sadie's headbanging. It seems harmless from what I've read. She actually does it affectionately, if you can believe it, and she'll really crack you one too! But she'll grab you really hard by the neck and do little head butts over and over again when she's really happy and wants to love on you. Strange kid!
  • Yes, G used to do it too. He would be sitting, then throw himself back and purposefully rattle his head. It freaked us out -- we didnt want him to damage his brain.

    His pedi wasn't worried though.

He outgrew the "hit my head just 'cuz" phase and now he's in a "hit my head when I'm mad I don't get what I want" phase. For that one, we just move him to a soft location (like the couch/ottoman/etc.), let him go nuts, and walk away. When it's soft, he doesn't get the effect he's going for, or the attention he's wanting, so he stops pretty quickly.
