chemical pregnancy and rh negative help!

Hi all-

A few months ago I had a BFP and then got AF at the usual time, which I assume means a chemical pregnancy. I am now at 5 weeks with a BFP! however, Im really concerned that being RH negative I might still need the Rhogam shot? I hadnt thought about it before and then one of my family members mentioned it to me. Has anyone had this problem and what did your doctor say?? Thanks!

Re: chemical pregnancy and rh negative help!

  • If you're RH negative, why would you need the shot? Is your DH RH positive?

  • I'm rh neg.  When I was pg with DS they gave me the rhogam shot around 20 something weeks.  After he was born they tested his blood.  If he was positive I would have gotten another rhogam shot.  He ended up being neg so I didn't need another shot.

What is your DH?  If he's also neg you won't need a shot.  However if DH is positive you will.

  • I know I will need one after this baby, but my main concern is if I have already been exposed, but Im wondering if that is even possible with such an early chemical pregnancy

  • I am pretty sure you don't need the shot for a chemical pregnancy because the fetus hasn't implanted and doesn't begin to make it's own blood.  You should call the doc just to reassure yourself, but I'd say you are fine.

Call your OB just to double check.  Being that you're pg again I think you're OK though but that's just my non professional opinion.

  •  I am not sure, I am RH negative but I have never had a mc.  You should call your OB and see what s/he wants to do.
  • i am RH negative and DH is +.  I had 2 m/c's and then Ethan.  My first M/C my old OB never checked what I was and I never got a shot.  The 2nd PG i did have the shot once I spotted then M/C.  My 3rd i did not have the shot until i was 28 weeks.  Then i had another after birth because Ethan is a positive.  You should not need the shot unless you have ANY kind of spotting.
  • I am rh negative. I got the shot around 20 weeks with my 1st pregnancy, and again after he was born (he is rh positive). I will be getting another shot for this pregnancy around 20 weeks again.
  • When you have your initial blood-work done they will test you for your blood type and whether you have the antibodies or not. If you don't have the antibodies you will be fine (and ease your mind) and will have to receive the shot (I have to receive it at 28 weeks and after delivery). I was concerned about this too but my doctor stated they automatically test for it, GL!

    Not true.

My neighbor just had a chemical pregnancy and she was given the shot.

  • Yes if you are not sure ask your OB to make sure they did an antibody screen and it was negative. That way you know you did not have Anti-D and need the shot. However, even if you were exposed and had a positive antibody screen a shot of RhIg won't hurt anything.

This. They'll test you as soon as you do the blood work.Don't worry, the odds are you're totally fine.

They give you the shot any time you miscarry just in case...I got one when I m/c at 5 1/2 weeks PG even though it probably wasn't necessary.

  • just talked to them and they said not to worry and they will check at the 8 week appt to make sure :) thanks everyone!
